Clare Past Forum Emigration List Project (1892-1924)

Post by Clare Admin » Fri Feb 18, 2011 12:48 pm

Some members of the Clare Past Forum have initiated a project which seeks to list people who have emigrated from County Clare and who passed through the emigration station on Ellis Island, New York between 1892 and 1924, using free and publicly available data provided online by the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation. The project will be managed by Paddy Casey, a member of the forum, in association with Clare County Library staff. We are now seeking volunteers to assist in this project by agreeing to transcribe relevant records relating to individual Clare parishes.

Anyone who is interested in participating should register their interest in transcribing a particular parish (if they have not already done so) by emailing clare.emigrants@gmail.com. You will then be contacted by the project manager. Please indicate preferred parish.

A page on the main library website has been created to accommodate the project at http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclar ... roject.htm

Search tips have been provided by Clare Past Forum member Tom McDowell.

Data should be transcribed whenever possible online using the Clare Ellis Island Form.

Transcribers who cannot use this form can download a template for transcribing and email it in to clare.emigrants@gmail.com following completion.

It is intended that volunteers will undertake to search for all emigrants from a particular parish. A table showing who has agreed to transcribe which parish is shown on the project page.

This project is the result of discussions on the "A comprehensive listing of Clare emigrants - new project?" topic on the Clare Past forum.

The project has got off to a good start.

Five days after the kickoff 10 people have signed on (see http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclar ... roject.htm ) and 127 records have been transcribed.

Clare family historians who are familiar with, or have connections to, one of the "vacant" parishes on the list at http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclar ... roject.htm and whose workload leaves them with time available to transcribe records are welcome to sign up for a parish by sending an email with their name and location to clare.emigrants@gmail.com It'll be great to have you on board !

UPDATE 24-Feb-2011: Fíona Tipple has signed up for Kilmanaheen parish and has already started transcribing, making the number of transcribers 11.

UPDATE 28-Feb-2011: Eric Shaw and Tom McDowell have submitted data which they had collected before this project started and which they have now updated. The other transcribers are also hard at it and we now have a total of 237 records of Clare emigrants.

UPDATE 05-Mar-2011: Tom McDowell has submitted further data which he had collected before this project began and which he has updated and added to. Formdesk transcriptions are coming in at a rate of knots and we now have a total of 1,310 records of Clare emigrants.

Here's the latest update.

The transcription project is forging ahead as follows:
  • Kilmaley parish emigrants have been transcribed by John Mayer and uploaded to the Library site at http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclar ... grants.htm
  • Kilnamona parish emigrants have been transcribed by Ronan Hegarty and uploaded to the Library site at http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclar ... grants.htm
  • Sharon Carberry has started transcribing the parishes of Clonlea and Kilmurry
  • Anne Morahan has signed up for the parishes of Oughtmama, Abbey and Drumcreehy and has started transcribing
  • Mary Ryan has completed transcription of the parish of Carran and her data will be put online shortly
  • Fiona Tipple (Kilmanaheen), Lucille Ellis (Kilmurry Ibrickane) and Áine Lynch (Kilfarboy) have already transcribed large numbers of emigrant records from their parishes but because the EI database contains very many emigrant records from those parishes they still have substantial numbers to transcribe
Added to these are the very large numbers of emigrant records already transcribed by Tom McDowell and Eric Shaw before this project began (see above).

Many thanks to all those who are contributing so much time and effort to this voluntary Clare genealogy project.

Pro memoriam, and for those who might like to add their shoulders to the wheel, the project is summarised at http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclar ... roject.htm

Update:

The transcription project is making great progress. We now have a total of 2087 emigrant records.

Subsequent to the previous update:
  • Emigrants from Carron parish, donated by Mary Ryan, have been published on the Library website
  • Emigrants from Kilseily parish, donated by Sharon Carberry, have been published on the Library website
  • Emigrants from Kilmurry-Negaul: Sharon Carberry has just completed her transcriptions and they have been submitted to the Library for publication
  • Substantial numbers of records are arriving each day via the Formdesk site so the completion of at least three additional large parishes can be expected shortly
Again, many thanks to all those who are contributing so much time and effort to this voluntary and successful Clare genealogy project.

Pro memoriam, and for those who might like to add their shoulders to the wheel, the project is summarised at http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclar ... roject.htm

I've just come across a manifest page from Ellis Island in which no less than 18 of the 30 people listed were from different parts of West Clare, going to different parts of the U.S. Those looking after this project for the relevant parishes might like to check that they have caught all these people:

These people left Queenstown aboard the S.S. Celtic on 15 Sep 1911 and arrived at Ellis Island on 23 Sep 1911. See images formerly freely available at
http://www.ellisisland.org/cgi-bin/tif2 ... 57.tif&S=1
and
http://www.ellisisland.org/cgi-bin/tif2 ... 56.tif&S=1
and available to subscribers at
http://interactive.ancestry.com/7488/NY ... 4005092549
and
http://interactive.ancestry.com/7488/NY ... 4005092549

I was looking for Delia O'Dea (no.29), later Mrs. Tom Cullinan. She was 22, female, single, servant, non-immigrant alien. Her last permanent residence was Tullabrack, Ireland. Her nearest relative or friend in Ireland was her sister Mrs. Woulfe, Tullabrack, Co. Clare. Her final destination was Buffalo, NY. She had previously been in the U.S. for 7 years in what looks like `Town' or `Iowa'. Delia was going to her brother Pat O'Dea, 36 Harvey [or Harry?] Place, Buffalo, NY. She was 5' 6" with fair hair, fair complexion and blue eyes. She was born in Tullabrack, Ireland.

The other West Clare people on the same page of the manifest, whose details I have partly transcribed, as best I can read the handwriting, were:

no.4 Catherine Talty (22), child of Michael Talty, Doonbeg, Co. Clare, b. Doonbeg, going to brother Michael Talty, 789 Washington St., NY;
no.5 Delia McMahon (22), child of Pat McMahon, Cooraclare, Co. Clare, b. Cooraclare, going to friend Mrs. Horward, 1101 Garden St., Hoboken, NJ;
no.6 Molly McDonnell (22), sibling of Ml. McDonnell, Baltard, Co. Clare, b. Baltard, going to sister Catherine McDonnell, 603 Grove St., Jersey City;
no.7 Delia Hedigan (18), child of John Hedigan, Kilmacduan, Co. Clare, b. Kilmacduan, going to sister Kate Hedigan, 7 Pleasant Ave., Weehauken Heights, New Jersey;
no.8 Thomas O'Brien (22), child of Mrs. O'Brien, Tullaro, Co. Clare, b. Tullaro, going to sister Mary O'Brien, 2701 Prairie Ave, Chicago, Ill.;
no.9 Michael Sexton (22), child of Ml. Sexton, Tarmon, Co. Clare, b. Tarmon, going to sister Delia Sexton, 32 Clarkson St., New York;
no.10 Mary Sexton (18), child of Ml. Sexton, Tarmon, Co. Clare, b. Tarmon, going to sister Delia Sexton, 32 Clarkson St., New York;
no.11 Ellen Doherty (22), child of John Doherty, Doonbeg, Co. Clare, b. Doonbeg, going to sister Mary McGrath, 201 Erie St., Jersey City;
no.18 Annie McMahon (20), child of Pat McMahon, Cooraclare, Co. Clare, b. Cooraclare, going to Brother Wm. McMahon, 161 Newark St., Hoboken, NJ;
no.20 Ellen McAuliff (42), child of Mrs. McAuliff, Connolly, Ennis, b. Ennis, going home to 350 West Orange St., Lancaster;
no.21 Bridget M. Madigan (23), child of Michael, Derreen, Liscannor, Co. Clare, b. Liscannor, going to her aunt Mrs. Murphy, 19 Elton St., Rochester, NY;
no.22 Anna Moore (23), child of Thomas Moore, Dereen, Liscannor, Co. Clare, b. Liscannor, going to her sister Delia Moore, 132 Hamlet St., Columbus;
no.25 Mary Hickey (22), last residence Kilrush, child of Ger Hickey, Cragaknock, Co. Clare, b. Cragaknock, going to sister Kate Neutsey[?], 303 Old Brygen, Bergen Road, Jersey City;
no.26 Nano Conway (18), last residence Ballynote, child of Ml. Conway, Ballynote, Co. Clare, going to Columbus, Ohio;
no.27 William Downes (22), child of John Downes, Tullahan, Co. Clare, b. Tullaher[?], going to cousin Patrick Waters, 206 7th Street, Jersey City;
no.28 Anne Killeen (22), child of Ml. Killeen, Doonbeg, Co. Clare, b. Doonbeg, going to sister Mollie Killeen (Waters), 206 7th Street, Jersey City; and
no.30 Katie Kelly (19), child of John Kelly, Kilard [sic], Co. Clare, b. Kilard [sic], going to cousin Michael Talty, 789 Washington Ave., New York. (Nos. 4 and 30 were going to the same relative; nos. 27 and 28 were going to the same relative.)

I haven't tried to match all the emigrants to the 1911 census, taken only a few months earlier.

Hi Paddy,
Thanks for West Clare emigrants.
I'm currently compiling Killard parish so have added your contributions.
Unlike any of the other parishes I've looked at for Clare I'm finding a very high percentage of Killard Parish emigrants heading for Jersey City addresses.
If anyone knows of a particular reason for this, I'd love to know.

Seasons greetings,
Tom McDowell

Hi Tom,

Jerry Blake is already working on Killard (see http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclar ... roject.htm ). This needs to be coordinated. Please get in touch with him directly, copies to me, to coordinate your work. I'll mail you both right away to get you connected.

Paddy C, et al.,

1. To whom should those, like myself, who are too busy working through our own relatives from different parishes to work systematically through a single parish, send details of Ellis Island emigrants that we find who are missing from the relevant parish lists? To you, to the library, or to the transcriber for the relevant parish? Or can one-off contributions for both complete and missing parishes be submitted using the online form which is not working at the moment? (I've sent you an e-mail with details of this.)

I cannot find the answer to this question on any of the online FAQs!

As per my recent post above, I almost always pick up a group of neighbours travelling together whenever I find a relative passing through Ellis Island and also note their details.

2. I have also been studying the three columns on the later manifests which can be used to deduce the emigrants' origins:
  • Last Permanent Residence
  • nearest relative or friend
  • Place of Birth

I presume that the residence column in the ellisisland.org database of transcriptions is taken from the first of these.

The nearest relative or friend column typically gives a parent's name and exact townland address, so is of far more use in mapping the precise origins of emigrants.

For example, four McNamara siblings (my grandmother's half-siblings) from the townland of Moveen West in the DED of Moveen, dispensary district of Carrigaholt, parish of Moyarta, barony of Moyarta, Poor Law Union of Kilrush, and County of Clare all gave their Last Permanent Residence as Ireland, Kilkee. Catherine and Annie gave their Place of Birth as Ireland, Kilkee, but John and Martin gave theirs as Ireland, Moveen.

Kilkee is probably the Post Town for Moveen West, but this family is unlikely to be found under Kilkee in any other genealogical records, and are in danger of appearing under Kilfearagh parish for the purposes of this project. Tom McDowell has naturally missed them in his search for emigrants from Moyarta.

I am anxious to see them listed at clarelibrary.ie - where hopefully some of Martin McNamara's descendants, who have lost touch with the rest of the family, will one day find them. Hence the first part of this post ...

Paddy W.,

Individual emigrants can be transcribed with the spreadsheet template which can be downloaded from http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclar ... roject.htm The resulting spreadsheet can be mailed to clare.emigrants@gmail.com

The online form has been deactivated and the link has been removed from the http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclar ... roject.htm page. Thank you for pointing this out.

The evidence regarding the last permanent residence (LPR) varies enormously from record to record (beginning with the legibility of a given entry) and it has to be left up to the transcriber to deduce the last permanent residence from all the data. As you point out, next of kin,, place of birth or other hints might be more useful than the entry in the LPR column in a manifest. Thus the LPR might say "Tubber", of which there are several in Ireland, but the next of kin might be of a well-known family in Tubber, Co.Clare, or the person might be going to, e.g. a brother in Cambridge, Massachusetts, who the transcriber knows to have been from Tubber, Co.Clare. There is a column "Assumed correct last residence" in the template. The Notes column in the template can be used for statements as to how the LPR was deduced.

There were two people working on Killard parish (Doonbeg) over two years ago but there is still nothing for this parish on the website. Is the work still ongoing or have the results gone astray somewhere? Or did both stop thinking that the other was continuing?
