Linking to Griffith's Valuation maps at askaboutireland.ie

Post by pwaldron » Wed Dec 12, 2012 5:48 pm

This is a technical question about genealogy websites which is not specific to Clare, but of relevance to all Irish genealogy:

I would like to send someone a link to bookmark a close-up of a plot on a Griffith's Valuation map, but cannot figure out how to find the appropriate URL. Has anyone figured out how to do this?

The links to these maps are of the form
http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith- ... ry=Ireland
which diverts automatically to
http://griffiths.askaboutireland.ie/gv4 ... RT%20OF%29

There is no point in bookmarking these, or any other link that I can come up with, for several reasons:
(a) the mysession parameter very soon times out and needs to be edited every time one visits the page
(b) using the zoom and pan controls to find the required plot has no effect on the URL (unlike the technology at maps.osi.ie, where the pan and zoom tools automatically change the URL in the browser address bar)
(c) although the Griffith's maps are linked to Google maps, the easy to use link icon in the collapsible frame which is to the left of the standard Google map is not present at askaboutireland.ie

I think I've seen a working link to a specific plot on the Griffith's maps somewhere, but cannot figure out how to do it.

Can anyone help?

What about trying a right click on the page in question, then go to Properties. Often times the URL is listed there which you can then cut-n-paste.

I just tried it and it seemed to work. It was a very long URL but I put that in tinyurl.com to create a shorter link. When I used that link, it took me right back to the map I had been looking at. Well, sort of...if I zoom in on an area and try the same thing, it doesn't take me to the zoomed in view, but back to the original pulled-back view. Hmmm...

I think you understand my problem now, Kurt ... and if you come back in an hour or two when your session has expired, you will probably have an even better understanding!

I suspect that it is only possible to make a link to the result of a search query - i.e. to create a link that replicates a search query, passing the terms of a query to the search engine of the database in question.

It would not be possible to link directly to a map, but you could give a link to the step before clicking on a map. In this case I think your link would be

http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith- ... =CLONDAGAD

.

not sure is this is any help, but if you know the actual piece you want to show them, how about doing a printscreen and emailing them the photo?

usually the button on the keyboard is abbreviated to PRTSC :)
