Seeking Lenihan's - Clonloum
Hello All,
I'm researching my family history and believe there may be a connection with the Lenihan family from Clonloum. The family were, parents:- Michael & Norah Lenihan (nee Smith) and their children (born between 1914 to 1924) were Mary, Anne, Norah, William, Michael & Cornelius Lenihan.
If you have a connection or are related to any of the above then I would love to hear from you.
Many thanks
Paul

Paul,
Would they be related to the Michael Lenihan and William Lenihan of Clonloum/Clonloun listed at http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclar ... pionl1.htm ?

Hello Paddy,
Many thanks for the pointer to the web-page. It certainly looks probable that they are the same William and Michael. Would you know who I could apply to for copies of the obituary and the acknowledgment? Your help has been very much appreciated.
Thanks

Paul,
I'm not sure how to get the copies but the Local Studies Centre of the Clare County Library will know how (see contact info at http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/librar ... studi1.htm ).
By the way, there is some more stuff on the Library site at http://www.clarelibrary.ie that might interest you. Just fire up their search facility and enter "Lenihan AND Clonloum" or "Lenihan AND Clonloun" into the top search box.
Enjoy !
Paddy

Re: Seeking Lenihan's - Clonloum
Hello Paddy,
I wonder if you can help me once again. The birth records for Michael and Norah Lenihan's children stated mother formerly Smith.
Mary, the first child was born in 1914. Searching the marriage index for Michael Lenihan & Norah Smith from 1905 to 1915 turned up nothing no matter how many time I went through the records.
On your last suggestion I followed your link and came across the article on Tim Smythe (1905 - 1982). It caught my attention that on the death of his parents he went to live with his Aunt Nora Lenihan in Clonloum, O'Callaghans Mills.
Doing a web search for Tim Smythe resulted in information of a memorial park in Ennis. Other web sites refer to Tim Smyth Park or even Tim Smith Park. I wonder if the Norah Smith I am looking for is Norah Smyth(e)
If anyone could assure me of Tim's correct spelling of his surname and if it could be innocently written down as Smith I would be grateful.
Many thanks
Paul

Hi Paul,
It sounds to me as if you have got your man without a doubt. Variant spellings were/are very common and the difference between Smith and Smythe is negligible.
I presume you've seen all the stuff on Tim Smythe at http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclar ... smythe.htm and the associated links. You've probably got enough there to locate the present-days Smythe descendants so you could contact them and get the full story on your family. The Eircom phone book at http://www.eircomphonebook.ie/ lists one Smythe in Clare, i.e. Smythe, Maureen, Shanaway rd Ennis, (065)6820813. She may be a relative of yours.
Also, do browse the Smiths, Smyths and Smythes in the 1901 census at http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclar ... Spears.htm and the Smiths and Smyths in the 1855 Griffiths Valuation at http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclar ... ithss3.htm (why, there is a James Smith listed at Fair Green Lane and you will remember that Fair Green became Tim Smythe Park (see http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclar ... terest.htm )).
Happy hunting !
Paddy

Great to hear that this is on the right track, Paul.
When you have worked on it for a bit, please do come back to this forum and give us feedback as to how you got on. Also, if you manage to put together a family tree on the basis of this information you might like to offer it to the Clare County Library for publication on their website as a quid pro quo for the information they supplied. You can see examples on the Library website (see "Donated Material" on the right side of the page at http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclar ... nealog.htm ).
Again: happy hunting !
Paddy
P.S. I like your pseudonym. Takes me back to my radio listening as a child. Tuning in to Dick Barton at 6.45 was a fixed part of each evening. P.

Re: Seeking Lenihan's - Clonloum
Hi All,
Many weeks ago I contacted the 'Clare Champion' via the internet seeking information on the Lenihan's from Clonloum. I never did get a reply and to be honest thought the paper must have gone out of circulation because all I could find on the web was some archived files.
What a surprise yesterday when I received a written letter from a relative of the Lenihan's who remembered most of the family I named. With the contact details provided, I soon hope to be in touch with them and confirm that I do indeed have the right Lenihan family.
Bye for now
Paul

Re: Seeking Lenihan's - Clonloum
Hello,
After waiting patiently for the relative of the Lenihan family from Clonloum who recently wrote to me to return from holidays I was able to contact him by telephone and have an interesting conversation with him. He believes that some of the family moved to England and they lost touch with them over the years. Unfortunately he was not able to cement the link I was looking for but told me that his brother had been doing his family tree for some time and that he would contact him for information and then get back in touch with me. He also told me that his sister had also decided to do some family research so he was quite hopeful that some information would soon be forthcoming.
So until then I must be patient and wait which is easier said than done.
Bye

Re: Seeking Lenihan's - Clonloum
Hi All,
Several months have now gone by and I did receive several telephone calls from Michael in Clonloum. He was related to the Anne Lenihan I found registered born 1918 Clonloum. He was extremely helpful but the end result was that this Anne Lenihan had never left Ireland and still lived down the road from him.
Since that time I have now found her death registered in England and have a copy of the obituary. Further information says she was born Nov 1922, but not where.
This truly has me puzzled as I don't recall finding another Ann Lenihan registered at the Irish Life Centre for the period 1915 to 1925.
Hopefully with this new information another search of the 1922 birth records will come up trumps.
Thanks to all for your help and support which has been appreciated.
