New Clare history website - War of Independence

Post by Padraig Og O Ruairc » Mon Jan 11, 2010 2:54 am

Hello all.
Ive been busy over the last few months putting together a new website about the War Of Independence in the IRA's First Western divisional area - Clare and South Galway. The web address is;

http://www.warofindependence.net

Its content includes eyewitness accounts of events, period photographs, history articles, accounts of ambushes and barracks attacks and an interactive map with photographs and diagrams showing where key events took place and the location of war memorials and war graves today.Although I'm the sites creator and administrator Im not the only contributor. Three other local historians who specialise in the War of Independence and Civil War period will be contributing articles and content to the site as it develops.

If anyone would like to write a relevant article for the site, or has pictures or other information they can contact me at padraigoruairc@gmail.com

So thats it check out the site - and if the sites administrators here could stick up a permanent link for the site id appreciate it!

Thanks

Hello Padraig
re: the Glenwood ambush.

A grandson of Sgt. Molloy who was killed in this ambush, contacted me recently looking for info about the ambush. I passed on the link to your website.

He told me that his grandfather's pocket watch was posted to the family home from Ballykinlar internment camp by one of the ambushers. The family rejected the watch and asked the postman to return it to the sender.

On a personal note, my father, then aged 12, was walking home from school after the ambush. He was stopped by a local RIC man and told to get off the road and continue home across the fields as the 'Tans were on a rampage, shooting indiscrimately.

Hi M. Mc Namara,

Ive recently gotten a copy of the RIC County Inspectors Report for January 1921 which provides additional information about the Ambush, so Ill be adding this to the account on the website shortly. Thanks for spreading the word about the website. If Sergeant Molloy would like he can contact me at the above e-mail

The two R.I.C. survivors of the ambush Constable H. Selve - the Driver, and Inspector Egan who were both injured in the attack presumably made claims for compensation and also would have given evidence at the inquest into the deaths of the six others. All this would have been reported in the local press 'The Saturday Record' and Clare Champion at the time. Details of the inquests into their deaths would presumably be kept in Kew, London.
