Thomas Westropp's description of ancient Clare woods

Post by smcarberry » Sun Sep 09, 2007 4:35 pm

In the Google Books section, use this key word (spelled exactly):
bearnafunshin

This will take you to a link to the Westropp article of April 1901 appearing
in the Proceedings of the Royal Irish Academy, Vol 27, Section c, No. 13,
entitled "The Forest of the Counties of the lower Shannon Valley." This
imaging unfortunately starts a few pages into the article, which may begin
on page 270. There are great hand-drawn maps. Don't miss the one
on p. 278 entitled "Oak Forest of Aughty" which shows the area from
(on the west) Ashgrove to (on the east) Derrynagittagh at Lough Graney,
then north above Maghera at Feakle, to south at Tulla. It will give you
a very useful perspective on how all these places, in different baronies,
actually relate to one another.

On p. 283, Kilgorey is described as being derived from "Gaury's Wood."

Chock full of insights and history, beyond where all the great old woods were.

Sharon,

I followed your instructions precisely - I think - but cannot get to the images you mention, just a couple of clips from a page. Could you give me some more leads, please ?

Finding the Westropp article

Post by smcarberry » Mon Sep 10, 2007 3:18 pm

The optical scanning can get tricky, and that is what Google Books uses.
I just inputted bearnafunshin and got right to the same spot that I had
indicated in yesterday's posting. However, this time fortuitously I was
skipping around the article looking for a different key word to provide,
when I happened across Westropp's other article in the same edition.
That one starts on p. 371 and is on ring forts and similar structures in
East Clare. To get to that article, use the key word Ballymacloon. I
tried it myself with just the key word, and up popped a link to the page on
which it occurs in that article, which is p. 377. Then, once you are on
the actual page 377, just go back to p. 272, which is where the images
for the other article start on Google Books.

It's worth the effort, believe me.

This still has me stumped, Sharon. All I get is a little snippet of a scanned image and nowhere on the page can I find any possiblity of gettng to other pages. I've tried it with IE instead of Firefox. Same result.

Another way to skin the cat

O.K., how about if I download the article, print it out, scan it into my
computer, and then upload the pages into the images section of this
Forum ? The article is that good - it really should be seen by anyone
having anything to do with central to east Clare.

Attempt to upload the East Clare woods map

Post by smcarberry » Tue Sep 18, 2007 12:09 am

I cannot download the entire article since the Google Books section does
not provide that capacity. However I used a digital camera to take an
image of the Google image of the Westropp map of The Oak Forests of
Aughty on p. 278. I tried twice but could not capture an image which
portrays well the placenames on the map. Some major ones are legible.

Also, in trying to follow the Forum's instructions on how to use Photobucket
to show images, I got through the Photobucket registration and upload
stages o.k. but cannot single click on any IMG text to send an image to my computer's clipboard in order to afterward take the step to provide the image. The best that I can do is provide the below links to images in my album on the Photobucket site. These are two attempts to show the very same map.
