Old Inagh Graveyard - transcriptions and photos

Post by murf » Sun May 16, 2021 12:43 am

I should draw attention to a recent addition to the IGP website which sees the completion of transcriptions and photos of headstones in the Old Inagh Graveyard, by contributors Michael O'Loughlin & Marianne McGough.

http://www.igp-web.com/IGPArchives/ire/ ... aghndx.htm

I have a possible ancestral connection to Headstone No.236, which reads:
Erected | by | MARGARET LYONS | Ballyduffmore | in memory of
| her fond husband | PATRICK LYONS | who died 27 Sept 1898 |
aged 82 years | their daugher ANNE | died 11th June 1900 |
aged 30 years | MICHAEL LYONS died June 1948 | PATRICK LYONS
died Jan 1959 | R.I.P.
The date of death for Patrick(Sr) is clear and unambiguous as 27 Sept 1898 see Photo 236.
Yet the civil death record shows his death date to be 23 Dec 1898.

So we are left to consider whether:
the stone mason made a slip of the chisel when chipping out the date,
or,
a slip of the tongue was made when registering the death on 30 Dec 1898.

I think the latter is more likely.
