Coolreigh Townland

Post by pdorgan » Fri Aug 25, 2017 4:30 pm

Hi,
I just recived a copy of a 1880 Marriage certificate for a Marriage at the Chapel in Tomganey, registered in Scarriff.
The Residence for both Bride and Groom is listed as "Coolreigh" would this Coolreagh ?
Thanks in advance..
Peter

Almost certainly. Coolreigh is in the parish of Kilnoe which is adjacent to the parish of Tomgraney (see parish maps at http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclar ... es_map.htm). Coolreigh and Coolreagh sound identical when spoken (e.g. to a registry clerk).

There are three Coolreaghs: Coolreagh (also called Coolreagh Earl in older leases) which includes the site of the castle, Coolreagh Beg which in recent times includes part of Coolreagh Earl and an older townland called Drumscale which appears in 17th century leases. Coolreagh Beg largely comprised of the O'Brien and later Westropp owned Coolreagh House demesne. Coolreaghmore is the third denomination. In most of the documents that I have seen, the "Coolreigh" spelling seems to relate to Coolreagh Earl, the westernmost part of the three Coolreaghs plus the immediate vicinity of Coolreagh House, but this might just be coincidence.
