Would anyone have information on so called double ditches on Clare farms -
origin, distribution, purpose?
I often heard the term used during the 1940s and 1950s
double ditches

Re: double ditches
Look up http://www.meathfieldnames.com for mention of double ditches.
This is an excellent report on the various Co Meath field names full of interesting information on common & unusual field names.
Check out "Other Interesting Findings" in the "Interesting Findings" section and you will see a report on double ditches including pictures.
I have no knowledge of Co Clare double ditches but maybe others have.

Re: double ditches
Thank you TreatyCity.
I grew up on a North Liberties farm where we had one, not far from Thomond Park.
There was a little path along the summit.
I am particularly interested in their original purpose.
Our one may have had a drainage function.
