CBS ~ Ennistymon ~ Do they release Student Records?

Post by s1nead » Wed Jul 15, 2015 5:54 am

My grandfather attended CBS in 1895.

Does the school release student records to family members?

If so, do you suggest that I just compose an email with my request? Or, is there a more formal way to go about this?

In 1896, he went to Terenure in Dublin ~

His father graduated from Springfield (St Flannan's) College in 1859 (1854-1859) ~

Do you think I could just ask these schools for the records?

Thank you!!

There are Ennistymon school records listed at http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclar ... index2.htm The year 1895 appears to be missing but you could look to see whether he is listed under one of the other years (e.g. 1889).

These school records are not confidential. There are old school registers lying around in school offices, attics and broom cupboards all around the County. Many of them have been transcribed and posted on the Clare Library website (http://www.clarelibrary.ie) and more are sure to appear as the transcribers beaver on and as more registers come to light.

If you are looking for records from a particular school whose records are not on-line you might call that school and ask whether they could help. Do call rather than writing. In my experience emails and letters about this sort of thing just end up on the "To Do (Mañana)" spike because the schools are up to their necks in other tasks. Understandably, genealogy is not a priority. In a phone call you can get a feel for whether they will have time to help you.

Hi

Springfield college is not exactly the same as St Flannans though one replaced the other. I suggest you ask Peter Beirne of Clare local studies for records of Springfield and if the enrollment records exist for the years you quote.http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/librar ... studi1.htm
You could also go directly to St Flannans http://www.stflannanscollege.ie/contact/

Thank you so much!

It is very interesting to learn tht school records are not confidential. I had assumed they were.

I will give them a call and let you know.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that "your" school registers may have been microfilmed by the Church of the Latter Day Saints (LDS) and indexed on their Family Search website at https://familysearch.org/

I recently found the Moyrhee school registers there and ordered the microfilm into our local LDS centre. They were full of information and were a kind of surrogate census of the locality. Re. your (reasonable) assumption that school records would be confidential (and I assume that modern-day records are), the Moyrhee registers not only listed the pupils but also the marks they had attained each year. The people concerned are long dead so in that sense this availability of their records is unlikely to be controversial.
