Forty years ago, wealthy young Harriet Vanger disappeared off the remote Swedish island owned and inhabited by the powerful but dysfunctional Vanger family. Octogenarian Uncle Henrik always thought she was murdered by someone in her own family and, wanting to solve the mystery before he dies, he drafts in an investigator, the disgraced financial journalist Mikael Blomkvist. Mikael is aided by the tattooed and fearless Lisbeth Salander, a ward of the state who has a photographic memory and who also happens to be an accomplished computer hacker. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is a violent and bloody thriller, a sinister family saga, a mystery of massive financial fraud and an ambiguous and haunting love story. It is the first of the Millennium trilogy by Stieg Larsson. Stieg, an acclaimed journalist, died in 2004 shortly after handing in the manuscripts for what will be his legacy.
