“Suite Française” by Irène Némirovsky - book for Nov. 2008

This stunning novel of life under Nazi occupation was discovered by the daughter of the author and published many years after Irene Némirovsky's tragic death at Auschwitz.

The book contains two narratives, one fictional and the other a factual account of the author’s life and how “Suite Française” came to be published. The novel depicts life in France in 1940 and 1941. Deeply compassionate and perceptive, it is a historic record of the period and also a brilliant, intensely moving piece of writing.

The facts surrounding the life of the author are as remarkable as the novel she wrote. Born in the Ukraine, Irène Némirovsky moved to France in 1919. She wrote "Suite Française" in the village of Issy-l'Evêque, where she had settled with her husband and two children after fleeing Paris. In July 1942, she was arrested by French policemen as "a stateless person of Jewish descent." She was transported to Auschwitz and died there in August.

“Suite Française” is an enthralling book that will stay with you long after you’ve read the final page.
