The Virgin Suicides by Jeffrey Eugenides- January 2012

Post by Clare Bookclub Mod » Tue Jan 03, 2012 5:12 pm

We are reading this novel for the teenage book club next month. John Banville considers it 'One of the finest novels in many years - a Catcher in the Rye for the Nineties'. It will be interesting to hear what the teenagers will make of it...

By the end of Jeffrey Eugenides' first paragraph you know all you need to know about this book. You have the plot- a whole row of adolescent sisters killing themselves, one after the other, in suburban America. You've caught the tone - wry and voluptuous with glittering black jokes carried along like seacoal by the smooth melancholy swell. You have noticed that Eugenides uses the rhythms of prose with exactitude, to shock, to amuse or to make music. And you know that you want to read on. -
