Russell Gallery - ‘Wing Swept Skys’ , the exciting new work by Dublin artist Roxanne Fitzmaurice kicked off on Saturday 3rd of July and was officially opened by composer and musician Maurice Seezer.
After her last solo show at the Clare Gallery almost six years ago, Roxanne has come back to the west of Ireland presenting her latest collection of truly beautiful and inspiring work.
This exhibition while landscape based is contextualized by the presence of birds. There is a pull between abstraction and representation. The paint is applied so that the solidity of the land shifts with the swirling, twisting forms of birds. The space the birds travel through is without boundaries, yet connected to the landscape through and above which they pass. The brushstrokes and texture of the paint engenders the flight of the birds as a single wing-beat is captured, or a gliding movement is followed through the landscape, which is being dissolved in the moment of their passing. The acquaintance with birds has led to a fascination that has woven them into our mythology and folklore as symbols of strength and power, wisdom, beauty, life and death.
Roxanne Fitzmaurice has widely exhibited in galleries around Ireland for the last ten years including RHA, Hallward and Mill Cove and her work can be found in many private and public collections including AIB Bank, Shelbourne Hotel, Barry Mc Cabe & Associates, D.I.T College of Marketing and Design, The Rotunda Hospital.
