Attempted murder of Crowe JP of Dromore Dec 1892

Post by Paddy Casey » Sun Dec 06, 2009 10:01 am

Mr Thomas Crowe, Justice of the Peace of Dromore, was shot at in Adcarney*, a couple of miles from Dromore, when driving home with his servant Patrick Murray. The shot hit and wounded Murray but he was not seriously injured. A farmer name Macnamara of Carrownacloghy near Crusheen was arrested on suspicion of complicity in the outrage. Several reasons for the outrage were mooted. Mr Crowe had been unpopular locally for evicting a tenant, dismissing a workman, prosecuting poachers, and sending the son of the dismissed workman to jail in Limerick (Irish Times, Saturday December 10 1892).

* On the direct road to the village of Ruan and about 4 miles from Ennis.
