Tithes for Killuran parish are in Roscommon (by mistake)

Post by Sduddy » Wed Mar 13, 2024 10:46 am

The tithe applotment books held in the National Archives have been digitally imaged and sorted by county (http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarc ... b/home.jsp), but Killuran parish, Co. Clare, has been mistakenly included in Killummod parish in Co. Roscommon**. The people who volunteered to transcribe the books for Clare Library had already done a wonderful job*, luckily, and one of those was Rhonda Dowell of New South Wales, who transcribed the books for Killurane: https://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/cocla ... an_tab.htm

Edward O’Callaghan and William Walsh were the commissioners assigned to Killuran parish and I have transcribed their statement dated 1827:
https://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalar ... _00162.pdf

We Edward O’Callaghan and William Welsh commissioners duly appointed and sworn under and by virtue of an act made in the fourth year of the reign of King George the fourth entitled “An act to provide for the establishing of composition for tithes in Ireland for a limited time["], to ascertain and fix a true and just composition for all tithes arising growing yielded or payable in the Parish of Killurane in the County of Clare, do hereby certify that the true and just amount of all tithes whatever within the said Parish is Two hundred and four pounds one shilling and eight pence (British) by the year, of which sum seventy eight pounds five shillings and six pence halfpenny (British) is due and payable to the Revd Francis Synge as a composition for all tithes claimable by him as Rector of the said Parish. That the sum of ninety two pounds six shillings and three halfpence (British) is due and payable to the Revd Wm Butler as a composition for the tithe claimable by him as Vicar of said Parish, and the sum of thirty three pounds ten shillings (British) is due and payable to the Revd Wm Reed as a composition for the tithe claimable by him as Rector and Prebend of Tomgrany. And we do further certify that the average price of oats, being the corn principally grown in said County for the period of seven years, ending the 21st day of November 1821, was fourteen shillings and one farthing (British) per barrel as taken from the Dublin Gazette.
Date this 10 day of February 1827.
Signed: William Welsh, Edward O’Callaghan, Commissioners
