Well, I’ve looked again at the civil record of the birth of Michael O’Neal in 1865, and see that the address is not just “Islands”, but “Islands, Inagh”. So this Islands is definitely a place in the parish of Inagh, and is not the Island in the townland of Clogher in Kilfenora parish. So my musings above can be scratched.
20 Mar 1865, Islands, Inagh: Birth of Michael to John O’Neal and Mary McCormack; informant: Thomas O’Neal, Islands, Inagh: https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/ ... 319698.pdf

There were three registration districts in Ennistymon Union: Roadford, Miltown Malbay and Ennistymon. About half of the townlands in Inagh parish lay in the registration district of Miltown Malbay and 21 townlands lay in the registration district of Ennistymon. The birth of Michael was registered in the registration district of Ennistymon, so Islands must lie somewhere among those 21 townlands in the north-northeast of Inagh: Ballyduff More, Ballyea North, Ballyea South, Boulavaun, Carrowkeal East, Carrowkeal West, Coolshingaun, Derry, Drumanure, Drumcarna, Drumcullaun, Drumduff, Drumlesh, Drumnagah, Garvillaun, Garvoghil, Gortbofarna, Maghera, Meelick, Sileshaun West, Sileshaun East.

The person who reported the birth of Michael was Thomas O’Neal. But is Thomas a brother of John O’Neal, or a nephew?
