Hi reets
James Farrell was in Cloghjordan when Mary Francis was born in Ennis, and I think Elizabeth and baby must have gone to Cloghjordan soon afterwards, as baby was in Cloghjordan when she died (aged 3 months). Elizabeth then returned to Ennis at some point between August 1900 and March 1901. She died in Ennis workhouse. It’s possible that she was deemed to belong to Ennis Union and therefore not the responsibility of any other Union workhouse. Boards of Guardians held long discussions regarding the admissibility of people from other Unions to their one.
I’ve run out of ideas and theories about the McNamaras – for now, at least. I’ve looked at the witnesses at Daniel’s wedding (Michael McNamara and Mary Anne Reddan), but have found no record that fits either of them. I’ve looked at the sponsors for his three children, and think that Thomas O’Brien and Anastasia Keane are probably just Causeway/Clonroad* neighbours. And I don’t think there is a record of Daniel’s death that you can send for: I looked at this New Zealand genealogy site:
https://natlib.govt.nz/researchers/guid ... ion-online, and went to
https://www.govt.nz/browse/history-cult ... w-zealand/. I entered “Daniel McNamara” and “08/04/1885” (date of death), but got no result.
* The Causeway leads to a junction with Clonroad, so people living in either place, I think, would qualify as neighbours – for map go to:
https://geohive.maps.arcgis.com/apps/we ... 7088a100c4 (note the tiny “accept” box). Go to “Basemap Gallery” and to “Historic 25”. Zoom in and to the east side of the town towards the railway. Clonroad was in the countryside at that time.
• 29 Jan 1871: John – sponsors: John Reddan, Margaret Reddan.
• 22 May 1872: Michael – sponsors: James McNamara**, Mary McGrath.
• 6 Nov 1873: Francis – sponsors: Thomas O’Brien, Anastasia Keane.
** James McNamara may be a son of Thomas McNamara (Mason) and Anne Daffy.
A James McMahon was baptised 8 July 1848. In the transcription donated to clarelibrary, the father is Thomas McMahon – but when looked at by “Mother’s surname” (Anne Daffy), it seems very likely that the name should be McNamara.
