No. 551 (Ní Nialáin): http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/r ... 001748058/
Áine Filimín Ní Nialáin (Anne Philomena Neylan/Nilan), aged 14, staying at Brews, Castle quarter, Muckanagh DED, is “inghean inghine” (daughter of a daughter).

No. 553 (Ní Fhloinn): http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/r ... 001748428/
Liam Ó Floinn, aged 60, living in Ranaghan, Muckanagh DED, gives his occupation as “Maor”, which the enumerator has translated as “Steward”. In 1901, Liam (William) gives his occupation as Farm Servant. His father’s occupation is Shepherd: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/r ... 000460940/

No. 557 (O Maoldhomhnaigh): http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/r ... 001762261/
Rísteard T. O Maoldhomhnaigh, living in Newmarket-on-Fergus Town, Newmarket DED, gives his occupation as Fuinnteoir (Baker). In 1901, he has the same occupation: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/r ... 000466524/

No 559. (Ua Rathaille): http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/r ... 001793444/
Pádriag Ua Rathaille, living in Ardataggle, O’Briensbridge DED, gives his occupation as Feirmeoir & Fear Siopa (Famer and Shopkeeper). In 1901, he has the same occupation: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/r ... 000483530/

No. 568. (O Raghallaigh): http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/r ... 001748754/
Seaghán O Raghallaigh is aged 80, is living in Moyhill, Rath DED, and his son Tomás, aged 39, is living with him. Máire aged 40 is wife of Tomás, so her relationship to Seaghán is “bean a mhach” (wife of his son). Séamus O Raghallaigh, aged 16, is “Mach a mhic” (son of his son). Eibhlín, aged 8, is “Inghean a mhic” (daughter of his son). The record of the marriage of Tomás and Máire in 1891 gives the Irish name for Moyhill as Knocknacarte as does the record of the birth of their son Patrick in 1892: https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/ ... 876163.pdf

No. 574. (Uí Dúbhchaine): http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/r ... 001748777/
In 1911, Toirdhealbhac Uí Dúbhchaine, aged 26, living in Rafline, Rath DED. He is Terence Duggan, aged 17, in 1901: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/p ... e/1068275/ Terence is an anglicization of Toirdhealbhac, also pronounced as Traolach.

Edit: However, as TBH points out in a post made on 13 May 2023 (see page 3 of this thread), Uí Dúbhchaine is not the Irish for Duggan; it is the Irish for Doheny. The surname, Ó Dubhchonna, was anglicised to Doheny, and this was the version used by the family as late as 1870 when it was given as the surname of Bridget upon her marriage to Patrick Leahy. I see that Doheny was also the surname given for Mary when she married Michael Collins in 1866: https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/ ... 239006.pdf

No. 599. (Ní Chléirigh): http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/r ... 001763239/
I am amending Cleary to Clara. Ó Cleirigh is usually Cleary, but Máire Ní Chléirigh and her son, Seaghán, living in Leamaneigh More, Urlan DED, give their surname as Clara in 1901: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/r ... 000467078/
The record of the marriage of Seaghán, in Feb 1911, gives his surname as Clara: https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/ ... 614303.pdf, and, likewise, the record of his mother’s death in 1936: https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/ ... 293920.pdf
The civil records show that Clara was almost entirely a Clare name.

No. 603. (Ní Ailpín): http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/r ... 001763326/
Liam Ó h-Ailpín, and his wife Cáit are living in Urlan Beg, Urlan DED. Their daughter, Eilís, is aged 14. Usually, Eilís is Elizabeth, but in this instance it is Beatrice: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/p ... g/1072116/

Well, I’ve been thinking about Láchtín O hOgáin from Ballyvraneen (mentioned in my posting above). I noticed that his sister Teresa gives her age as 23, which is a little older than her true age (she was born in 1890): https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/ ... 897015.pdf). It may be that Láchtín did likewise and that he is the child called Joseph who was born in 1893. It may be that Láchtín is a second name, or a pet name: https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/ ... 862665.pdf.

No. 8 (Mac An Airchinnigh): http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/r ... 001763660/.
Síneadh, the eldest daughter of Seaghan Mac An Airchinnigh and his wife Mairighead, living in Cahersherkin, Ballagh DED, gives her birthplace as “Alban” (Scotland). Six of the other children were born in Co. na Midhe (Co. Meath), and the 1901 shows the family living there in Oldcastle, Oldcastle DED: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/r ... 001128346/. Sínead is usually given as Irish for Jane, but here it is Irish for Jessie. Cathal is given as Irish for Charles – this was the usual Anglicization of Cathal.
Mairighead Nic An Airchinnigh was Margaret Nicoll (from Co. Limerick); Una Nic Niocaill may be Margaret’s sister, but just describes herself as a visitor (ar cuairt).

No. 37 (Ní hEichir): http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/r ... 001772117/
Seumas O’hEichir, living in Ballyragara, Ballynacally DED, gives his occupation as Siúnéir (Carpenter) and “Siopa dom (earra cruaidh)” (as far as I can make out), which means “I have a Hardware shop”. In 1901, Seumas gives his occupation as Carpenter and Builder: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/r ... 000472056/

No. 49 (Ní Cullinán): http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/r ... 001768109/
Sibhán Ni Cullinán, living in Leeds, Ballyvaskin DED, is Johanna in 1901: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/r ... 000469422/

No. 53 (Ní Glíseán): http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/r ... 001798073/
Mathúin Uí Glíseán, living in Coolready, Boherglass DED, I expected to have given his name as Mahon in 1901, but it is Martin. His daughter Siobhán is Johanna: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/r ... 000485689/

No. 55 and No. 56: (Ní Cadhla) (Ní Dhochartaigh): http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/r ... 001798089/
I am amending “Kealy / Keane” to Kiely.
Seosam O Dochartaigh, living in Coolready, Boherglass DED, is “Maighistir scoile agus Maighistir Poist” (Schoolmaster and Postmaster). His sister, Brighidh Ní Cadhla, is Schoolmistress. She had married Patrick O’Kiely in January 1911: https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/ ... 614413.pdf. It is interesting to see that Brighid and Pádraig Ó Cadhla gave their names in both English and Irish in the marriage record. I think that some registrars did not accept forms completed in Irish. Padhraig Ó Cadhla must have returned to his teaching post in Waterford – the 1911 census shows him there: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/p ... na/663946/
In 1901, Joseph O’Doherty and Bridget O’Doherty were both living at home in Coolready, and both were already teaching: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/r ... 000485690/

No. 79. (Ní Chéirinn): http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/r ... 001755802/:
Síle Ní Chéirinn, living in Clare Town, Clareabbey, gives her maiden name (she is wife of Seán Gordún, Schoolteacher). Seán’s birthplace is Sasana (England). The record of the marriage of John Gordon and Cecelia Kerin, in Ennis, in 1910, provides another example of names given in both Irish and English: https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/ ... 634600.pdf
The records of the births of the children of John Hildred Gordon give the mother’s name as Mary Ellen, which bears no relation to either Síle, or Cecelia, but Mary Ellen must have decided otherwise.
Mary Kerin was born to John Kerin and Margaret Taaffe in 1880: https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/ ... 043657.pdf. The record of her baptism gives her name as Mary Ellen.

No. 88. (O Cuinneáin): http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/r ... 001761391/.
I am amending Cunneen to Kinnane. I think Andréas O Cuinneáin, Giolla (Servant or Gillie) at the house of Padraig an tSeaca, in Clenagh, Clenagh, is the Andrew Kinnane, aged 19, living at home in Drumline, Drumline DED, in 1901: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/p ... e/1071621/

No. 91. (Shinners): http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/r ... 001787218/
Miceál Shinners, living in Cloghera, Cloghera DED, gives his occupation as “Fear an amaidh, Siúneir,” (Carpenter). In 1901 he describes himself as Master Carpenter: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/r ... 000482404/

No. 92. (Ó Briain): http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/r ... 001787316/
I have only listed Tadhg Ó Briain, living in Trough, Cloghera DED, and have omitted Margaret Keane, living in the same house, and who gives her occupation as Coimhéadoir, which might mean Occupier, or Keeper, but means Housekeeper in this instance, I think. Tadhg gives his occupation as “dearbhráthair mná an talmhán (Feirmeoir)”, which means “Brother of a woman of the land (Farmer).” The 1901 census shows that he is a brother of Margaret: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/r ... 000482453/

No. 93. (Ó Maoldhomhnaigh): http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/r ... 001787318/
Pádraig Ó Maoldhomhnaigh, son of Pádraig Ó Maoldhomhnaigh, living in Trough, Cloghera DED, gives his occupation as Saor Adhmaid, Siúnéir, two different words for Carpenter. Another son is Conchabhar, a name often given as Connor, but in 1901 he is Corney: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/r ... 000482452/

I think I have done as much work as I can with the 1911 names in Irish, so I will now set about inserting the names I had omitted and present a new list of names.

A few more notes:

No. 101 (Ní Conmara): http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/r ... 001764508/
Pádraic Ní Conmara and Máire [Longe] living in Clooney South, Clooney DED, have a son Máthion, who was called Matthew in the record of his birth: https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/ ... 689595.pdf

No. 14 (Lidda): http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/r ... 001763682/
Bríghid Lidda, aged 17, “Seirbhéiseach Ginearálta” (General Servant), at the house of Áine Nic Annairchinnigh, in Cahersherkin, Ballagh DED, might be Bridget Leddy, aged 6, living at home in Martry, Clooney DED, in 1901: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/r ... 000467693/

No. 117 (Ó Maolainn): http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/r ... 001764665/
Pádraigh Ó Maoláinn and his wife Nora, living in Moanreel, North, Clooney DED, have as son, Loclainn, (mis-transcribed as “Boclainn”), aged 16. He is Lot, aged 6, in 1901: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/r ... 000467700/, and the record of his birth in 1894 gives his name as Lott: https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/ ... 842231.pdf
The name “Lott” seems to have been a tradition in the Mullins family of Moanreel, as this civil record shows: https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/ ... 319695.pdf

No. 119 (Ní Maoláin): http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/r ... 001764669/
Muiris Ó Maoláin, living in Moanreel, North (Clooney DED), gives his occupation as Maoir Bóthair Íarain (Railway Ganger). In 1901, he was newly married and living with at the house of Martin O’Looney, his father-in-law, in Monreal North, Clooney DED: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/r ... 000467708/. Maurice Mullins is mentioned briefly in In the Tracks of the West Clare Railway, by Edmund Lenihan – see page 115, the last page of this preview of the book: https://books.google.ie/books/about/In_ ... &q&f=false

No. 125 (Ní Loinghsigh): http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/r ... 001780126/
Mícheál Ó Loinghsígh and his wife Bríghid, living in Coolmeen, Coolmeen DED, have their baby granddaughter (inghean mhic), Máire Ní Loinghsigh, aged 2, staying with them; birthplace: Baile Atha Cliath (Dublin).

My new, improved list is attached. The numbering is now out of kilter with the old numbering. I will use the new numbering if I have any further notes to contribute and I hope there will be contributions and corrections from other people as well.

I’ve edited this posting in order to replace the attachment, ‘Surnames in Irish – 1911(3)’. There were so many typographical errors, I decided to replace it with a new attachment, ‘Surnames in Irish – 1911(4)’. I’ve included “Fitzgibbon” as the English version of “Ní Giobúin” – see next posting.

Well, I’ve found a mistake already: No. 193 (Ní Ghiobúin): http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/r ... 001753816/. “Gibbons” should be “Fitzgibbon.” Anna Ní Ghiobúin, a widow, aged 45, living at the house of Seaghan MacFhlannchadha, in Parnell Street, Ennis No. 2 Urban DED, is Anne Fitzgibbons, Shopkeeper, wife of Patrick Fitzgibbons, living in Main Street, Miltown Malbay DED, in 1901 (I think): http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/r ... 000470240/
This marriage, in 1894, may be the marriage of Patrick and Anne: https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/ ... 845116.pdf.
Patrick Fitzgibbons died in Miltown Malbay in 1903, aged 80; informant: Annie Fitzgibbons, widow of deceased: https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/ ... 596138.pdf
Anne Fitzgibbon died at Parnell St., Ennis, in 1933, aged 62: https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/ ... 314637.pdf

I looked in the 1911 census for people living in other counties who gave their birthplace as Co. Clare and who gave their names in Irish. I set up a spreadsheet, thinking that there might be a hundred such people, but found only 17, and these 17 include three students at Maynooth college (seminary), who probably were back in the county, or, at least in the Diocese of Killaloe, a few years later.

I think I’ve discovered why I found so few people in other counties, who gave their names in Irish and whose birthplace was Co. Clare. It seems that the online transcription of the 1911 census includes only those who gave “Co. Clare” as their birthplace; all those who gave their birthplace as “Co. An Chláir” are not included. This began to dawn on me when I was looking at topic “Carmody family of Fodry Co Clare” (http://www.ourlibrary.ca/phpbb2/viewtop ... ran#p12741) and I realized that the family of Seamus Mac Cárthaigh was not on my list. Then I checked my list and noted that each person on it had written “Co. Clare” rather than “Co. An Chláir.” When I came the three who were attending Maynooth College, I saw that there were several students there who gave their birthplace as Co. An Chláir, but who were not on my list.

Well, it’s not that simple after all. In order to find people who gave their birthplace as Co. Clare, I had used the “More Search Options” button, and entered Clare in the County of Origin. Then I’d extracted (from the results) all those whose names that were in Irish. Among those were 3 students attending Maynooth College. But now I find that these three students had given Co. An Chláir (Not "Co. Clare"), so the net has some holes in it.

Anyway, I’m not going to try to find the Clare people living in other counties who gave their names in Irish and their birthplace as Co. An Chláir – it’s clear now that it would be much too difficult.

But, as I was looking at Maynooth College, I noted some 6 more students who gave their birthplace as Co. An Chláir:

Page 4. Padraig Ua Cléirigh (Patrick Cleary), 25, Macleighinn Diadhachta (Theology Student), Co. An Chláir.
Page 4. Domhnall Mac an Chro (Daniel Crowe), 25, Co. An Chláir.
Page 7. Pádhraic MacConsaidín (Patrick Considine), 21, Co. an Chláir.
Page 9. Tomás O’Níalláin (Thomas Neylan), 20, Co. An Chláir.
Page 9. Seosamh de Barra (John Barry), 21, Co. An Chláir.
Page 9. Seághan O’Caoin [Caoimh?) (John O’Keen or Keefe?), 21, Co. An Chláir.

I’ve added these to the three I already had:
Page 11. Mártain Ó Muirdheaigh (Martin Murray), 21, Co. An Chláir.
Page 12. Seaghán Mac Consaidín (John Considine), 21, Co. An Chláir.
Page 12. Padraig O’Deághaidh (Patrick O’Dea), 22, Co. An Chláir

Although it is not part of my project, I also noted those students from Co. Clare who gave their names in English. They are easy to find of course, thanks to that Search Option, but I’ve added the census page to make it easier to find each entry:
Page 1. John Francis Hogan, Vice-President, aged 52, Clare.
Page 3. James Madden, 24, Clare.
Page 3. Michael McKenna, 25, Clare.
Page 3. Thomas J. MacNamara, 25, Clare.
Page 9. James Considine, 23, Co. Clare.
Page 16. Andrew M Sexton, 18, Clare.
Page 16. Thomas Maloney, 19, Clare.
Page 16. John Clancy, 19, Clare.
Page 17. James McInerney, 21, Clare.
Page 18. Alfred Mac?n [Keenan?], 18, Clare.

I'm attaching my new list although I've come to realise that it is far from complete at present; it can be added to in the future.

The 1911 census (as transcribed by National Archives) shows some people living in Co. Limerick, who were born in Co. Clare, and who gave their names in Irish. I am listing them here because, apart from two of them, they are not included in the list of people from Co. Clare; this was because they gave “Co. an Chláir” as their county of origin. The two who were included, Tomás O Tuama and Senán Ó Coinnigeán, gave Co. Clare as their county of origin.

House 8 in Pallaskenry Town (a) (Pallaskenry, Limerick.

I’ve done some more work on my project. I’ve checked the other 4 counties in the province of Connacht, and the 12 counties in the province of Leinster, and found very few people from Co. Clare who gave their names in Irish, except in Co. Dublin where there were several:

Co. Mayo
House 13 in Cloonkeen (Cloonkeen, Mayo)

Co. Kildare
As already entered in spreadsheet.

1901 census: Ellen Griffin, 51, Landowner: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/r ... 001311376/, living at House House 1, Glebe (Powerscourt, Wicklow). Her sister Lusia J, 44, is living with her, but gives her birthplace as Limerick City.

Co. Westmeath
House 10 in Friary Lane (Athlone East Urban, Westmeath)
An t-athair Maitiú Ó hEaghráin, 40, Priest, Co. Clare
An br Didacus Mac Connara, 35, Lay Brother, Co. Clare: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/r ... 003517477/

The 9 counties of Ulster are still to be checked. Then I will be asking for help with the English version of some of the surnames, so that I can enter them in the spreadsheet.
Also I will be hoping that people will let me know of anyone I’ve missed.

Beannachtaí na Féile Pádraig oraibh! (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e39v-7NRwrE).
Happy St Patrick’s Day!

I looked at the nine Ulster counties and found only three people from Clare who gave their names in Irish:

Co. Down
House 33 in Teconnaught (Rossconor, Down)
Tomás Ó Chathail, 48, Máistir Scoile [Schoolmaster], Co. Clare: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/r ... 002217420/

Tomás is included in the list of people from Co. Clare.

1901 census: Thomas Cahill, 37, N. Teacher, Co. Clare: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/r ... 000726838/, living at House 11 in Kilmore village (Kilmore, Down).

House 33 in Belmont Avenue (Victoria (part of), Down)
Seumas Tomás Mac Giolla Dé, 36, Riarthoir – Teach Ceirde Greaseach [Administrator/Clerk – Shoemaking Trade], Co. an Cláir: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/r ... 002203748/

1901 census: James Gildea, 28, Commercial Clerk – Boot Trade, Co. Clare: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/r ... 000764051/, living at House 15 in Victoria Road (Bangor, Down).

Co. Antrim

House 18 in Victoria Gardens (Clifton, Belfast Urban No. 2, Antrim)
Roibeárd P. Mac Gaothain, 31, Cleireac Oifig a Phoist [Post Office Clerk], Co. an Cláir: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/r ... 001403248/

1901 census: Robert McGann, 21, Clerk – Post Office, Co. Clare: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/r ... 000342351/, living at House 19 in Malone Road (Windsor Ward, Antrim).

A good way to find the English version of a surname is to look at Form B1 (House and Building Return) of the census form. All the names there are in English. That was how I found that “Uí Uigsted” in Limerick was Irish for “Wixted”: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/p ... nd/626645/. However, that method helps with the names of householders only. It does not help with lodgers, visitors, relatives etc.

I have edited some of my postings to include notes which will help show the English version of the Irish name (I had already done this with Co. Galway, Co. Down and Co. Antrim). There are some names, however, that I cannot match to an English version:

Co. Tipperary:
House 1 in Drummin, (Pt. of) (Nenagh West Urban, Tipperary)
Seaghán A. Mac Fhiachra, aon is triocad [31], Bráthair Críostamhail – Muinteoir [Christian Brother – Teacher], Co. an Chláir
Tomás B Mac Cumhaill, 20, Bráthair Críostamhail – Muinteoir [Christian Brother – Teacher], Co. an Chláir: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/r ... 003311488/

Co. Cork:
House 30 in Farranferris (St. Mary’s, Cork)
Liam C Ó Laochdha, 39, Member of Religious Community – Teacher, Co an Clair
Próinsias R Ó Laithimh, 29, Member of Religious Community – Teacher, Co an Clair: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/r ... 001900494/

1901 census: Failed to find William Leahy(?), and Francis Lahive/Lahiff(?)

Co. Westmeath:
House 10 in Friary Lane (Athlone East Urban, Westmeath)
An t-athair Maitiú Ó hEaghráin, 40, Priest, Co. Clare
An br Didacus Mac Connara, 35, Lay Brother, Co. Clare: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/r ... 003517477/

I failed to find Maitiú Ó hEaghráin in the 1901 census, but I found Br. Didacus Mac Connara:Michael McNamara, 25, Laybrother: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/r ... 001265617/, living at House 1 in Abbeyland (Multyfarnham, Westmeath)

Co. Dublin:
House 11 in North Street (Swords East, Dublin)
Mairgread Ní Brothalaigh, 32, Cailín Tighe [Servant Girl], Coillbeithe, Co an Cláir.
Eibhlín Ní Gormáin, 38, Oide Sgoile [School Teacher], Carthuadh na Faoileán(?), Co an Chláir: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/r ... 000012126/

1901 census: Ellie O’Gorman, 31, National Teacher: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/r ... 000474635/, living at House 3 in Kilbaha (Kilballyowen, Clare).

I’ve failed to find Mairgread Ní Brothalaigh in 1901. She might be Margaret Bradley, aged 19 living in Tullig West (Tullig, Clare): http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/r ... 000475295/

In short, I am hoping someone can help with those names (above) that have proved too difficult for me:
Seaghán A. Mac Fhiachra
Tomás B Mac Cumhaill
Liam C Ó Laochdha
Próinsias R Ó Laithimh
An t-athair Maitiú Ó hEaghráin
Mairgread Ní Brothalaigh

I found Seaghán A. Mac Fhiachra (John A. Carey) in the 1901 census. He is a member of a community living at House 16 in Pudding Lane (Thurles Town, Tipperary): http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/r ... 001170901/.

According to MacLysaght (The Surnames of Ireland), Mac Fhiachra is Keighery. MacLysaght adds that the anglicized forms Keighry, Kehery, Keaghry are now rare, as these have been absorbed by Carey. Carey is also the anglicized from of Ó Ciardha.
