Kilrush racetrack action 1885

Post by smcarberry » Thu Nov 26, 2009 3:43 pm

Newspapers in the U.S. picked up on a lot of the activities in Clare connected to evictions. The 1880s were the time of the Land League in Ireland, and labor union organizing (including some riots) in cities such as Chicago, where undoubtedly Clare men were involved. Here is an account of how the people acted on their views and beliefs, bringing action to even the genteel venue of a race track where gentlemen ran their horses. I cannot provide the full article, which runs on for a few more sentences beyond those sections below. However, none of the jockeys or horses were fatally injured.

This article appeared on 13 Sep 1885 in the Richmond Dispatch, a Virginia newspaper. The page image cut off the page number, but it might have been p. 8.
