1901/1911 surname mapping throughout Ireland now online

Post by smcarberry » Fri Aug 06, 2021 1:57 pm

My apologies if someone already posted about an earlier version of this family historian's effort. Today Barry Griffin (of the Kilmaley Griffins, originally Griffey) announced on the Genealogy Reddit that he now has open to the general public a search function based on the 1901 and 1911 Irish censuses (separate results & there is also a link to a Scottish version) so that, with wild cards, a researcher can input a surname and view an all-Ireland map populated with dots to indicate population densities of that surname, against a backdrop of county boundaries. Very simple to use and the results are instant. Apparently there is also information on which of the results are related to farming households, which was his objective in developing this function.

Hi Sharon

Thank you very much for posting that link to Barry Griffin's mapping of surnames. I've been using it and it is great. It's amazing how some surnames remained confined almost entirely to one or two counties right up to 1911.
