Clare Journal, Mon 22 Jan 1856: Deaths. Yesterday morning, suddenly, Mr. John Burke of the Mall, in this town.
This morning at his residence Jail street, in this town, Mr. John Morony. To say he was universally respected would be but faint eulogy for one who has been before the public for a period of more than thirty years. During the existence of the old Clare Militia, he served in its ranks as sergeant, and held the rank of Sergeant-Major on the staff until death severed the bonds which linked him unto life. Since the establishment of the Poor Law, he was one of the Guardians for the Electoral division of Ennis, and when we say that he discharged the duties during the most trying and arduous period of this country’s history, with kindness, diligence and sympathy, we simply pourtray with feeble words the outline of the acts of one to whom the poor never appealed in vain, and who viewed with an eye of pity and feeling of sorrow, the misery and wretchedness, it was not in his power as an individual to relieve. Ennis wore a melancholy appearance today. The shopkeepers moved by a common feeling have given expression of their sorrow. A large family mourns his loss. And those who had dealings with him in his public life, as clerk to the County Treasurer, whose confidence he fully possessed, as well as those to whom he was endeared in the private relations of this world’s existence, will alike shed a tear of sympathy for one of our eldest and most respected townsmen. We presume that he will be buried with “military” honours. The “pensioners” in the absence of the militia forming the firing party.
