Clare Journal, Mon 1 Aug 1859:
Emigration. [a Letter]
Liverpool, July 28, 1859.
[To] Mr. William Graham, Emigration Agent, Ennis. Sir, We beg to inform you of our safe arrival here. We met your cousin Mr. Wm. Graham at landing; he called our names; took us to his house; treated us kindly; and supplied each emigrant with tins, bed, and bedding for 5s., as you agreed with us. We are to sail this evening. As we are sure that many of our friends in “Inagh” will have to fly from the persecution and rack-rents of their newly-made landlords, “God bless the mark.” We earnestly request our beloved parish priest, Rev. Thos. Quinn, to advise them to engage passage from you, as they will receive the same kind and honest treatment as we have, and for which we return you thanks. Should any bombasting agent in Ennis say this letter is fictitious, we refer him to Mr. Michael Barry of your town, to whose care many of us have directed letters for our friends. If enquiry is made in Inagh, Killamona, Kilmealy, Miltown Malbay, Clare Castle, or Six-mile Bridge, our letters can be seen, passing the same well-merited enconiums on you as contained in this. We have received great kindness from Messrs. Guion and Co., for whom you engaged us. Wishing you and family many happy years in good health, to direct our ill-treated neighbours to the land of our adoption, we remain, Dear Sir, your grateful friends,
