Clare Freeman, Wed 2 Mar 1881: A correspondent writing from Clarke County, Washington, U.S., informs us of the somewhat mysterious death of a farmer named John Connell, a native of County Clare. Some two years since the deceased purchased a farm in the above district and lived, it seems, a very lonely and secluded life. During the severe weather of December last he was suddenly missed by his neighbours, and his cattle were observed wandering about in a starving condition. Upon one or two persons entering his house, Connell was found quite dead, having every appearance of being so for several days. It was evident that the intense cold had brought on a speedy congestion of the lungs. Our informant adds, that deceased died possessed of three thousand dollars and that his mother and other members of his family are still living in the County Clare. Limerick Chronicle.
Clare Freeman, Sat 16 Sep 1882: On the 16th of August, Marcus Talbot met his death at Independence City, Missouri, under the following circumstances: On the evening of the day mentioned the conductor of an incoming passenger train reported at the station that a robber was on board. This occurred on the Missouri Pacific Railroad, at the depot of which Talbot was employed as an official at the time. A deputy-sheriff, who was present, undertook to arrest the thief, and Talbot volunteered to assist him. Talbot ran rapidly in pursuit of the man wanted, when the deputy, who is believed to have been drunk at the time, mistaken him for the pursued, fired his revolver, hitting poor Talbot in the stomach. The wounded man only lived an hour. Talbot was widely known in Missouri, Kansas, and Colorado, and was loved by all who knew him. An athlete and a type of manly beauty, he was just the man to be favourite in the far West. His heart and hand were always open at the right time. Few men have gone from amongst us more deeply regretted. We can scarcely restrain our indignation against the unfortunate wretch who killed our friend, and we all deeply sympathise with his widow and the members of his late family in the “Old Country.”
