Clare Freeman, Wed 27 Jul 1881:
Tulla Board of Guardians. From our correspondent.
Local Government Board, Dublin, 25th July 1881.
Sir, The Local Government Board for Ireland have had before them the minutes of proceeding of the Board of Guardians of Tulla Union of the 19th inst, from which it appears that the Guardians ordered the master to give the inmates a meat dinner on the 24th inst, and in reference to this order I am directed by the Board to call the attention of the Guardians to the 18th article of the Workhouse Rules, and to inquire the reason for incurring this expenditure, for which there is no legal authority.
The proposal to change the dietary to potatoes requires further details, and a copy of the scale should be sent to this office for consideration.
By order of the Board, B. Banes, Secretary.

Reply as follows: The Board wished to inaugurate the introduction of the potato dietary by giving the inmates a meat dinner same as that usually given at Christmas and Easter and which have been given by an order of the board on the application of the Master with the consent and concurrence of the Medical Officer. A copy of the dietary scale to be forwarded with minutes.
Clare Freeman, Wed 3 Aug. 1881:
Tulla Union.
Local Government Board, Dublin, 1st August, 1881.
Sir, The Local Government Board for Ireland acknowledge the receipt of minutes of the Board of Guardians on the 26th ult, and with reference to the minute relating to the meat dinner ordered for the inmates of the workhouse on the 24th ultimo. The Local Government are of opinion that no proper reason has been given for incurring this increased expenditure, which will, probably, be the subject of disallowance by the auditor.
By order, B Banks, Secretary.
Sheila
