Clare Freeman, Wed 10 Sep 1879:
Fashionable Marriage. On yesterday the Protestant Parish Church of this town was filled by a fashionable assemblage to witness the acclamation of the marriage of Capt. George Crowe, Clare Militia, with Miss Gertrude Crowe, daughter of the late Wainright Crowe, Esq, of Cahircalla. The interior of the church was decorated with flowers and exotics of the season, and as the bride and bridegroom entered, attended by their charming bridesmaids, Mrs Harvey, who courteously gave her services, played upon the organ, to great perfection, the wedding march. The Rev Canon Dwyer, rector, performed the marriage ceremony.
The six bridesmaids were, the Misses Edith, Nelly, and Annie Crowe, (sisters of the bride), the Misses Annie and Dora Blood Smyth, and Miss Fenilla Dwyer. They wore dresses of ivory cashmere, made with paniers, waistcoats, and slashed sleeves, 3 trimmed with cardinal, and 3 with pale blue satin, and edgings of brettonne lace, and ivory satin caps, trimmed with poppies, corn flowers, and wheat, each bridesmaid carried an ivory satin fan, the gift of the bridegroom, and the two youngest, Miss Annie Crowe, and Miss Dora Blood Smyth, carried in addition, baskets of flowers.
The bride, who was given away by her god-father, Major Blood Smyth, wore a dress of the richest ivory satin, made with a long train, profusely trimmed with chatelaines of orange-blossoms and myrtle, the body was cuirass with puffed sleeves and ruffles of honitan lace, tuile veil and wreath of orange blossom and myrtle. She wore a diamond locket, and carried in her hand a beautiful white bouquet, both gifts of the bridegroom.
After the dejeuner the bride and bridegroom, amidst a shower of rice, left for the continent.
Sheila
