The minutes having been read and signed the relieving officers books were taken up, and amongst the applicants for out-door relief from the district of Newmarket was a woman named Ellen Higgins, represented by the relieving officer (Morrice) as the Postmistress at Bunratty, who had four children and in a destitute state, her salary from the Government being only £3 per annum.
Indignation was expressed at the paltry amount paid the Postmistress by the heads of the department, and an order made for an allowance of 2s 6d per week.
