Clare Freeman, Sat 10 Aug 1878:
We extract the following from the Canadian Advocate in connection with a lecture recently delivered in the hall of the Total Abstinence Society by the Rev. Mr. Clancy, P.P., of Ferryland, a native of Ennis an eloquent preacher, and a credit to the county of Clare. The Rev Gentleman is brother of Mr Stephen Clancy, of this town, who is much respected by the inhabitants.
Leo.
The Rev. Mr Clancy, P.P., of Ferryland, delivered a brilliant lecture before a fair, respectable and appreciative, if not very large audience in the Total Abstinence Hall on Thursday evening, on the engrossing title, “Leo.” [the new pope]. The Lecture was prepared for the benefit of the St. Joseph’s Catholic Institute, the members of which owe a deep debt of gratitude to the reverend lecturer for the sincere interest that he must have in their Society, a warm interest and feeling, which broken weather, bad roads, and a long journey could not damp, all which he encountered to contribute his learning and eloquence to the progress of the Institute.
Without however, using more space in preliminary observations, the writer deems it right to proceed to give an account of the lecture, which report must of necessity be very meager, considering that the Advocate cannot afford him much space [quite a bit of space afforded here to the lecture].
