Clare Freeman, Wed 9 Jun 1875:
Clare Castle promises to come to something as a trading town. At present there are no less than fourteen crafts of various descriptions crowded along the Quay.
Surely, I thought, Clare Castle was already “something”, but, in this chapter, Eric Shaw explains that the coming of the railway to Clare Castle in 1859 caused a drop in business and a decline to the port of Clare: https://clarecastleballyea.clareheritag ... 1-2014.pdf

Clare Freeman, Wed 15 May 1878:
As evidence of the increase of shipping at Clare Castle the importance of that port as demanding the attention of the Board of Works to deepen the river and improve the quay, we were yesterday gratified to observe no less than 15 vessels lying in the river, waiting to discharge their cargo, there being only quayage for five.
