Clare Journal, Thur 17 May 1866:
Emigration, Delapidation, and Sensation. On Tuesday last, while a four-horse-vehicle – The Star of the West – was passing through the town laden with emigrants from Galway, on its way to the Railway Station, it came in collision with Mr Russell’s Ennistymon car (Flannigan, driver) and an ass laden with straw at the corner of Jail Street, leading from O’Connell’s Square. The force of the collision completely upset the car, and deprived it at the same time of its left wing. The driver was upset into the well, and a passenger that sat on the opposite side was spilled on the roadway. By a dexterous lounge the ass succeeded to escape with his load of straw, and it was only by the timely interference of a porter in the employment of Messrs Garvey and Lalor, the woman in charge of the donkey was saved from being run over by the horses. The accident soon brought a crowd of persons to the street and the dullness of the day was somewhat broken in upon. After a short explanation with the constabulary, the driver of the Star of the West proceeded to the railway and the crowd dispersed.
