“Limerick Chronicle”

2 January 1872

Robbery of £1,400

The following are additional particulars to what appeared in the Clare intelligence of our last:

During the night of the 13th instant, the above sum, principally in bank notes, was stolen from the bedroom of an hotel in Dublin, and the thief cleared off with his booty. The money was the property of Mr Henry Mansergh, and the alleged thief is a relative of that gentleman, with whom he had travelled from Limerick, and was fully acquainted with his business and knew the amount of money he had. On the following morning Mr Mansergh found both money and relative missing, and consequently gave information to the police. After searching for the missing man some days the police received information to the effect that he had gone to Liverpool. The Liverpool detective police were communicated with and Detective Officer Thornthwaite was then set on the track, and found that the wanted man had been living in great style at the leading hotels, under the name of Captain De Vere, and finally traced him to a house of ill-fame. Here a desperate struggle took place, but the young man was ultimately taken into custody, and will be sent back to Dublin.
