Meelick in 1880

The winter of 1879/ 1880 saw much distress in Ireland. One relief measure was a distribution of seed
to small farmers by the Boards of Guardians. In March 1880, a distribution of seed under the Agricultural Seeds Loan Act,
to Meelick and North Liberties small farmers took place at the Limerick workhouse. To receive tickets eligible people were required
to present a certificate signed by a Union Guardian.
Several hundred people showed up. Many had not obtained the required signature and were refused admission.
A large number forced the gate. There was some disorder. Order was restored by police from Caherdavin, Parteen and William street stations. [Munster News, March 17]
