Bethell

Post by M. McNamara » Mon Nov 02, 2009 12:12 pm

I recently had a visit from an Australian man who was researching the Bethell family. One of his ancestors was Bethell from Sixmilebridge. That particular family no longer live in SMB, having left in c. 1912. Thanks to the 1901 & 1911 censuses online & Griffith's valuation, I was able to fill in some blanks in the family history and also direct him to the location of the family farm. From there, he was directed to and met some distant (and unknown) relatives in Limerick city.

The point of this posting is to advise readers that this Australian man has done extensive research about the family in Irl., GB, Australia & NZ. Anybody researching the same family could save time by corresponding with him and I would be happy to pass on his email address which he left with me.

Michael

I have information on the descendants up to the present day of Edmond M'Cann and Annabella Bethel(l) who married in Limerick PLU in 1864.

I have no idea of Annabella's background, but since all the Bethels in Clare in Griffith and in 1901 were to be found in Ieverstown, there's a good chance that's where she came from.

I would be glad to share if this is of relevance.

I have an interest in the Bethel family, as I believe that Grace Bethel's husband John Connell of Mountallon was a possible
brother of my family's Anne Connell Donnellan (see below parish records). The Bethel group of families in Clare used the forenames Isaac and William, which I realize are the names of some family members who went to Australia and thus probably the ancestors of the fellow who initiated contact. So, yes, I would like to have contact information for him.

I show below my small collection of Bethel data, but in this Forum Paddy Casey has already added a newspaper article with a listing for the Sixmilebridge family; see

I'm not sure whether or not Bethal [sic] Engineers of Watergate, Limerick were related to the Sixmilebridge family, but thought that the attached picture and caption might be of interest to Bethell researchers. It appears on p.132 of `In the Shadow of the Spire: A Profile of St. John's Parish' (1991), compiled and edited by Rev. W. Fitzmaurice, Adm, St. John's, and Kevin Hannan.

According to the transcript of her marriage certificate at familysearch.org, Mrs Annabella McCann mentioned above was the daughter of a Francis Bethel. Kate Steers Bethel who married William Ponsonby Angley on 2 Sep 1868 was similarly the daughter of Francis Bethel. It can be deduced from a death notice and funeral report in the Limerick Chronicle of 28 Jan and 2 Feb 1905, at http://www.limerickcity.ie/media/ryall, ... a%20dn.pdf and
http://www.limerickcity.ie/media/ryall,mrs%20fr.pdf that Mrs McCann and Mrs Angley were sisters and that they were both nieces (on their mother's side) of Mrs Elizabeth Ryall (nee Steers), widow of William, of Birr. The McCann-Bethel marriage took place at St. Munchin's in Limerick, so Francis was probably not resident in Sixmilebridge. The only Francis Bethal (sic) in Griffith's Valuation lived in Ballyhall Street in Roscrea, Co. Tipperary and the Ryall-Steers marriage also took place in Roscrea. So this family probably came to Clare only after the 1864 marriage of Edmund McCann and Annabella Bethel.

I've just come across another Bethell family in Limerick:

Jeremiah Bartley (junior) m. Catherine Bethell (Limerick 1926 Q3 v5 p178).

They are buried with his family in grave 80Sb in Mount St. Lawrence:

Jeremiah Bartley (senior) bur. 20 Feb 1924 aged 77.
He married (Limerick 1879 Q3 v5 p231) Anne Ryan.
They had at least six children, but Anne was buried 28 Dec 1893.
Jeremiah and some of their children are in censuses at
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/p ... e/1498308/
and
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/p ... ne/649765/

Their son Patrick Joseph b. 26 Apr 1880 bur. 29 Jul 1881, aged 1 year 3 months.
Probable daughters were Bridget bur. 10 Jul 1889 aged 1 day and Margaret was bur. 9 Jul 1915 aged 22.

Jeremiah Bartley (junior) bur. 6 Nov 1964 aged 81.
Catherine Bartley née Bethel bur. 3 Jun 1969 aged 70.

Could this be one of the two Catherines in the Bethel household in Ieverstown in 1911?
See
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/p ... wn/367290/
Mrs Bartley's age at death puts her midway between the two Catherines in the 1911 census return. The only other Cath* Bethel* that I can find in 1911 is in Derry.
