Opera set in Clare "Hearts of Erin"

Post by smcarberry » Thu Mar 12, 2020 12:59 pm

Back in the pre-1920 days of profusely sentimental songs about the old country, a Dublin-born composer Victor Herbert (see biography, including a photo of him socializing with John Philip Sousa), chose County Clare as the setting for his opera "Hearts of Erin" and then presented it in a well-known NYC theatre owned by the Shubert mega-organization. This was a fairly big deal back then, although it's been buried for a long while, until I stumbled across mention online last week and dug it out. The opera name was later changed to just "Eileen." Edit: the proposed attachment of the Herbert biography saved as a screenshot has an invalid file extension so I can't attach it. The link is: https://www.loc.gov/item/ihas.200185356
