A Flurry of Military Marriages, Ennis 1855-56

“Around 1855 the people of Ennis petitioned the government to move the Clare Militia’s headquarters to Ennis [from Clarecastle]”, writes Kieran Kennedy in “The Clare Militia 1793-1909”, The Other Clare Vol. 27 (2003). The move must have taken place in 1856 and I think the soldiers must have looked very smart and won the hearts of the Ennis girls - hence the flurry of marriages (below), which petered out after a while. The fever hospital in Ennis became Clare Militia’s headquarters and Kieran Kennedy says that by 1891, there were 135 males and 35 females resident in the Ennis quarters. 1891 was also the year this painting was exhibited at the Royal Irish Academy: “Military Manoeuvres” by Richard Thomas Moynan: http://onlinecollection.nationalgallery ... manoeuvres - The leader of the band has the soldier’s helmet - but he’s been spotted.
