Do Clare & Limerick newspapers show details of people convicted of crimes?

My gg grandfather John Lynch joined the HEIC at Exeter in 1848 [as shown on his Embarkation Record] and leaving for India in 1848 in the 2nd European Light Infantry, stated that he was from Kilrush, Co Clare b about June 1827 of which I cannot find any record as records are only found from December 1827. His father was shown as Patrick and no mother shown on any of his records, and this is where I am at my brick wall. John only stayed in India for 3 years although signed up for 10 but his father in law paid for his 'purchase out of the army' in January 1852. He had married an Indo Briton lady, Paulina Thorpe and they had a daughter Deborah Jane, my gt grandmother. They left for New South Wales, Australia in October 1852 and arrived March 1853 and only a few months later John was in trouble with the law, which I have found he continued to be in police custody for a few years on and off. He and Paulina had a daughter in 1859 [when he was out of Darlinghurst gaol] I cannot find a death for him and in 1865 his wife remarried stating on her marriage record she was a widow. The reason I was curious about convictions in newspapers is as John seemed to be always in trouble with the law perhaps he was in trouble in Kilrush or Limerick [which I am wondering whether this is where he was really from] and if so, this is why he joined the army in Exeter.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Joan :D

Hi Joan - yes, the many county papers did carry reports of some court proceedings relating to crimes in their localities. The Clare library has copies of some of these papers. A search of the Irish Newspapers site may assist you, although John Lynch a common name and you would need some firmer dates. Have you tried the excellent John Grenham site?

Hi Kerry and thank you once again for your help. If John was in trouble with the law in Kilrush area I suppose I am looking at a window from about 1840 to 1848 when he left for India from Exeter where he also may have been in trouble. I am only surmising he was in trouble but feel with his trouble in Australia I would not doubt it at all. I will take a look at John Grenham's site. Thank you again, Joan
