In the nineteenth century much Clare turf was conveyed to Limerick along the
Shannon. The Limerick Chronicle of June 3, 1857 notes that turf from Clare
is being stored on the quayside. Some Harbour Board members felt that it
should be moved on after 48 hours, others felt that no time restriction should be
placed. This with a view to encouraging the trade.
In the late 1940s I saw a gondola deliver turf in to Bunratty bridge.
