Escape of an elephant at Kildysart
Considerable sensation was caused at Kildysart on Saturday last during the mid-day performance of Messrs Powell and Clarke's circus, in consequence of the escape of their female elephant, 'Juno.' The elephant rushed out of the circus, and in the excitement several persons of both sexes were knocked and frightened, but fortunately no serious injury resulted. After racing at top speed through the village, she was captured by her tamer, 'Ivan Dobrinski.' Not being content with this escapade, she made another break away towards the conclusion of the evening's entertainment, and took a cross-country run, through gardens of potatoes, bogs, &c., and eventually was captured by several of the circus company who were mounted on horses, led by Dobrinski, near Ballinacally, after running four miles. The company did not put 'Juno' through her performance in consequence of the above breaches of discipline.
