Kilmihil Marriages and Baptisms 1849 - 1869

Post by Sduddy » Wed Apr 03, 2019 10:26 am

Here is my transcription of Kilmihil baptisms 1829 – 1869: https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls ... 1/mode/1up
The handwriting is not at all clear and my first draft was full of question marks, so I used the index at the beginning of the register (made by Fr. Gaynor in 1945) to amend it. On a few occasions I checked the civil records.

Here is my transcription of Kilmihil marriages 1829 – 1869: https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls ... 1/mode/1up - scroll to page 76, where the marriage section of the register begins with an index made by Fr. Gaynor in 1945 – very helpful for the transcription. There were only a few instances where I differed from Fr. Gaynor and these are typed in bold.

These transcriptions are not intended to replace Fr. Gaynor’s index, which is more useful that my transcriptions in a number of ways:

(1) Because he was transcribing from the register itself, Fr. Gaynor was able to read those entries at the bottom of pages, which are too dark for me to read.
(2) He uses the modern version of names and brings together all the variants. He also brings names that begin with “O’” together with those that omit the O’ (i.e. Halloran and O’Halloran) and he treats Carthy and McCarthy as the same name.
(3) He realises that children born out of wedlock may be known by either the father’s name or the mother’s name and so lists those children under both names.
(4) He occasionally includes other useful notes.

Here is my transcription of Kilmihil baptisms 1870 -1881: https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls ... 1/mode/1up

Again, the index made by Fr. Gaynor in 1945 is excellent (page 5 online):
(1) It groups families and brings variants of names together, i.e McCarthy and Carthy, Halvey and Falvey, Keary and Carey.
(2) It lists the children born to each couple, going right up to 1905.
(3) It includes interesting notes.

There are just a couple of instances where I differed from Fr. Gaynor and these are typed in bold.

Most of these records can be checked against the civil records of births on irishgenealogy.ie (look under Kilrush).
