James Sheedy & Maria Hehir, Ennis, married 1871

Post by mom2nic » Mon Feb 04, 2019 9:49 pm

Hello all, I am trying to find some additional information on James Sheedy and Maria Hehir who were married in South Dublin 1871. I have found the baptismal records for their children (Honora 1872, John 1874, Patrick 1876, Francis James (Frank) 1878 and Mary 1880). The records indicate that they lived on Jail Street. It seems from the marriage record Maria was from Ennis, where James is noted as County Clare. James' father looks like Jacobus and his mother Anna Hynes. Maria's father looks like Michael and mother Catherine Sheehy. I am not 100% sure because the document is very hard to read.

Francis (Frank) Sheedy is my grandfather and I know he, Honora (Nora) and Mary all came to the US together with their parents in 1895. I have not been able to locate any information regarding James' or Maria's parents or any other relatives prior to 1870 or any information on John and Patrick.

I would truly appreciate any help anyone could provide. My son and I will be traveling to Ireland this summer and are looking forward to seeing where my Dad's family came from. Thanks. Libby Sheedy Weinman

Hi Libby
Not sure how much help this may be, but in the Ennis Baptism register at
https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls ... 3/mode/1up
there is a baptism of Patrick Hehir, father Michael, Mother Catherine Sheedy, sponsors Pat Malone and Anne Molony.
Residence could be Lysaght's Lane.
Date 22 Aug 1856
Interesting that there is a Pat Malone in Lysaght's Lane in the 1901 census, possibly a descendant of the above sponsor?

Hi again Libby
After taking a second look at the wording of your post I wonder if you have sighted the civil marriage record of James and Maria at
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/ ... 164438.pdf

The Ennis Catholic parish baptisms are at
https://www.ennisparish.com/genealogy/
If you just put Sheedy in the search box it will show all the Sheedy children.
Then using these dates you may go to the parish registers at
https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls ... 1/mode/1up
to find the original microfilm records which give you the names of all the sponsors.

On Mary's civil birth cert of Dec 1880 James Sheedy's occupation is shown as "Eating House Keeper".
In Guy's Directory of 1893, under the heading "Refreshment Rooms" J. Sheedy, Jail Street.

OK, a little twist to the mystery. Looking at the parish records, it seems that on Patrick Sheedy's parish baptismal certificate, Maria Hehir became Catherine Hehir !!!

Found the sponsors also:
Honora - John Hehir & Kate Hehir
John - Henry (?) Keane & Tuberdy (?)
Patrick - Michael Hehir & Catherine Hehir
Francis James - Michl Hehir & Mary Keane

Any help would be appreciated. Would love to gather as much info as possible and to bring home some family history to my father, Francis Richard Sheedy (94 years old) from my son and I's trip to Ireland.

Thanks. Libby Sheedy Weinman
