Hello - I am hoping that someone on the forum with access to the US version of Ancestry.com could kindly check an Irish relation for me? I only have the UK Heritage level access, but a search of the US records shows a Peter Valkenburg born abt 1882 in Ballinrobe, Mayo (not Van/von Valkenburg) departs Queenstown for NY in 1906. There is an arrival, a possible army record and a census entry for him. I would really appreciate any assistance from someone with US-level access to this site. Happy to search for any Aus records in return!
regards, Kerry

Hi Kerry,
Valkenburg would have to be one of the less common Irish names!
FamillySearch has all the documents you requested for free, it just now requires you to register. Below is a search result which includes the census reports, a marriage, the military records, his immigration in 1906 and a bit more for Peter Valkenburg of Baltimobe (??), Ireland according to his 1915 marriage record in Oregon.

Good luck.

I can help Kerry. He was going to St Louis from the ship manifest.
In 1910 he was listed in Fort Gibbons army post in Alaska.
March 1st 1919 he sailed from St Nazaire in France to Hoboken NJ. Post WW1 duty I imagine.
Peter Valkenburg
Gender: Male
Marriage Date: 18 Sep 1915
Marriage Place: Astoria, Clatsop, Oregon, USA
Spouse: Mary Josephine Donovan
Film Number: 001838395
She died 10 Dec 1919 in Clatsop, Oregon
in 1930 he was in Los Angeles, still a soldier but widowed.
Looks like he died in 1936 and is buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Wheat Ridge, Jefferson County, Colorado

Thank you Jimbo & Dosfromclare. Seems this immigrant had a hard life, judging by the records. He married a widow, who died a few years later - Peter seems to have taken responsibility for her children (looking at the census for 1920).
