Kilmacduane Baptisms 1854-1881 and Marriages 1853-1867

Post by Sduddy » Fri Feb 16, 2018 9:48 am

Here attached is my transcription of Kilmacduane baptisms 1854 – 1880: https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls ... 1/mode/1up
The original register is lost. This is a transcription of a transcription made in 1926 by Fr. P. Ryan.
Fr. Ryan made a lot of mistakes. These become obvious when the data is sorted by the father’s surname, and again when sorted by the mother’s surname. But I have not attempted to change any of his transcription, or amend any of his mistakes. Researchers now have the advantage of being able compare the names that they suspect are wrong with the civil birth records on http://www.irishgenealogy.ie. - look under Kilrush.
All of the question marks are Fr. Ryan’s, except a few in parentheses which are mine. All the notes are his notes and show that he took great pains with his task.

Here attached is my transcription of Kilmacduane marriages 1853 – 1867: https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls ... 1/mode/1up

Again this is a transcription of a transcription made by Fr. P. Ryan in 1927, but I have given the Latin names in English. Again all the question marks are Fr. Ryan’s, except a few in parentheses which are mine.

Just three letters of freedom (to marry in another parish) are recorded:
Letter of freedom for Daniel Reidy to marry Susan Moylan, issued Jan. 29, 1864.
Letter of freedom for Andrew Calnan, issued Feb. 07, 1860 (bride-to-be not recorded).
Letter of freedom for John Quin, Brisla, issued Feb. 13, 1860 (bride-to-be not recorded).

Thanks so much for that Sheila.
I have a particular interest in Kilmacduane for it is the home of the Callinan branch of my family, and I have spent many hours poring over the microfilm trying to squeeze out that extra drop of info. It is so nice now to see all the data consolidated by your alpha listings.
The work you are doing is so valuable.
You are saving us all many headaches and sore eyes :P

Thanks Murf

It looks like Fr. P. Ryan had a lot of difficulty with that trancription, and does not seem to have been the first priest who struggled to put some order on the records: on page 34 (online) of the marriage register, Fr. Ryan says, “ The year 1859 seems to have been the first that a regular record of Baptisms and Marriages was made. Earlier entries have, I believe, been compiled either from fragmentary documents or from information supplied by the people to Rev. M. Quinlivan, P.P., who it appears succeeded in the pastoral charge to the Rev. William Moloney in Nov. 1858”

I notice that I did not do a very good job transcribing that list of priests. I stopped short at the end of the left-hand side. I should have noticed that there were more names on the right-hand side. I am now adding them here:

Rev. Michael J. Hehir, present P.P.
Rev. Charles Culligan P.P. Appointed P.P. from Kilmurry McMahon 1936.
Rev. Denis McNamara - died here in the parish – a native of Scariff.
Rev. Timothy Doheny – 1911-1921. Died P.P. Lower Feakle – native of Cloughjordan [Co Tipperary]
Rev. Peter Ryan – (Jan) 1921 – 1927 (June) transferred to Roscrea – native of Kilrush.
Rev. T .G. Sammon. October 1927 to
Rev. Denis Flannery
Rev. Michael Casey
Rev. J O’Neill
Rev. Patk Hayes – 1941. Transferred to Doonbeg.
Rev. Ml. Gunning 1938-1941. Transferred to Dunkevin (Dunkeirin?).
Rev. Wm. O’Donohue July 1941-Dec 1945. Transferred to Bodyke. Native of Ballywilliam.
Rev. John Hannon Dec. 1945.
