Calloo family

Post by kerrie tuni » Mon Jan 29, 2018 1:21 pm

Calloo - I am looking for information on the Calloo family (Daniel & Winifred with daughter Margaret, age 22 & four sons) who came to Australia aboard the "Agricola" in 1841. Does anyone know of this family?

Hi Kerrie

I decided that Calloo was probably the same name as Culloo, or Cullow, which can be found in East Clare. Go to the homepage of Clare Genealogy and Family History: http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclar ... nealog.htm, and you will see that there’s a transcription of the Tithe Applotment Books, which you can search by Surname: http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclar ... _index.htm
You will see that there are two Daniel Cullows in Tulla town, which is in Tulla parish.
Once I had found that very good clue, I then looked at my transcription of the Tulla parish baptisms 1819-1846 and found the baptism of Margaret Cullue, daughter of Dan. Cullue and Winnifred Molony, on April 17th 1819. You can look at the original record on page 6 (right hand side) of the Tulla parish register: https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls ... 1/mode/1up

If you look at my transcription of that Tulla register of baptisms: http://www.ourlibrary.ca/phpbb2/viewtop ... f=1&t=6902, and download the attachment that gives the baptisms by Father’s Surname, you will see that Daniel and Margaret also had other children baptised in Tulla: John on Apr. 29, 1831, and Daniel [junior] on Jun. 03, 1835.
I’m sure there were several other children between the birth of Margaret and the birth of John, but these do not appear – a lot of baptisms went unrecorded, I’m afraid.

I’m delighted to have been able to find Daniel and Winifred.

Thank you Sheila. Any chance of finding the marriage of Daniel & Winifred about 1819?
I hope to come to Ireland this year. Is the catholic church from that parish still standing & if so, could you tell me how to find it?

Hi Kerrie

No, I haven't found the marriage of Daniel and Winifred and don’t know where it took place. Marriages almost always took place in the parish of the bride, so it may not have taken place in Tulla. Here is the 1842 map showing Tulla and the RC Chapel is plain to be seen: http://maps.osi.ie/publicviewer/#V2,549074,679782,11,7.

When I switch to the present day satellite image I can see that it is still the same one that is there. I suspect that it was very new chapel in 1842, and I wonder if the chapel that preceded it was somewhere else near the town. This is where a Tulla historian is needed. One thing I do know is that when the 1842 map was made the word “Chapel” was used to denote Roman Catholic, while the word “Church” was used to denote Church of Ireland, or else ruins of some antiquity.

Thanks again Sheila. Can you give me the street address of where the rc church is now please.

When I looked up the Allotment book, "Gardens" & "Knockane" are in the comments. Do you know what this means?

Was there any census done in Ireland before 1841?

Hi Kerrie

Yes, I saw “Knockane” in the Tithe Applotment Books, but don’t know what it refers to. I looked at the information on Tulla: http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclar ... parish.htm and checked the townlands, but did not find Knockane. “Garden” is just a garden – probably at the back of the house.

The first official census was taken in 1821, the second was taken in 1831, but the information regarding individual families is lost, and we have only general information which gives us a very rough idea of population growth in those years. If you go to http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie and click on “Browse” you will see how very little census information we have from the 19th century.

I don’t know the name of the street where the church is, so I searched it and saw that it was the Church of St. Peter and Paul, Tulla. I doubt that it needs any address apart from that.

By the way, I should have mentioned that another variant of the name Cullow/Culloo is Cullough - I notice that this version of the name is used three times in the 1846-1862 register of baptisms.

Hi Sheila, thanks for all your help.
I would like to find Michael Culloo's baptism - he was born in 1824. Can you help?

Hi Kerrie

There’s a gap in the Tulla parish register of baptisms from Feb. 1822 to Sept. 1825 – probably some pages were loose and fell out and were lost. So the baptism of Michael in 1824 is lost, I’m afraid.
When I was checking for Michael, I found the baptism of James on May 22, 1828 - I had given you John baptised Apr. 29, 1831 and Daniel baptised Jun. 03, 1835, but somehow missed James.
The only consolation I can give you as to the date of Michael’s birth is this: the age given for Margaret (age 22) in the immigration record in 1841 is accurate, so Michael’s is probably accurate too.
