Newmarket-on-Fergus Baptisms and Marriages 1828-1866

Post by Sduddy » Mon Jan 22, 2018 12:25 pm

Here is my transcription of Newmarket-on-Fergus baptisms, 1828 -1866: https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls ... 1/mode/1up

A bit of a disappointment is that it's the mother’s married name that's often given by the priest. So what I’ve entered as the mother’s surname is often that of the father. But there’s bound to be some cases where the surnames were the same, of course.
Also, the abbreviations of first names, ie. Jno., Jas., Wm. etc., are often very unclear, and I often confuse Marg. (for Margaret) with Mary, and I probably confuse “Patt” with “Batt”. I will have confused some surnames too - for instance, Burke and Rourke, Hallinan and Halloran, Cummins and Cunneen, Conlaghty and Coulaghty, Hartney and Hastings. So my transcripion must be treated with caution.
Entries were not always made in order of date. It looks as if the curate chipped in with his baptisms every now and then. So when you are looking for the original of a record, look over the whole of the page.

HOLD EVERYTHING - just after submitting my reply (Marriages) I suddenly realised that the entries I refer to there are baptisms. So now I will need to insert them into the baptisms. And then I will re-submit my baptisms. That will be just a little later on today. So don't download yet.

OK - I've now included those baptisms and sorted the data accordingly. Phew!

Here is the FIRST DRAFT of my transcription of Newmarket-on-Fergus marriages 1828 – 1865: https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls ... 1/mode/1up

I need help with the entries on pages 190, right, and 191, left, before I begin to sort the data. The order of the names in these entries is not clear to me and I’m quite sure what I have in this first draft is wrong. I need to know who married who and which are the sponsors. I would be grateful to anyone who is a member of Ancestry, or Roots Ireland, if they would take a look at their transcriptions for those entries and let me know what they have.

HOLD ON - I just realised that those entries are baptisms, mistakenly entered under Marriages. It was the word "sponsors" that switched on the light bulb. I will take them out of Marriages and will submit the sorted marriages later on today.

OK - I've deleted that first-draft attachment and am now submitting my edited transcription of the Newmarket-on-Fergus marriages.

Sheila,

This is such a welcome addition to the parish registers. While I have already viewed the film and extracted marriages for brides whose husbands were of families residing in the Parish of O'Callaghan's Mills, seeing the rare surnames associated with my family (Bennis, Bethel) as sponsors and witnesses is very valuable. I am getting a much better picture of those families in this time period.

Thanks for your hard work. I appreciate what a grind it is to get through these registers. It is such a worthwhile effort, and the benefit is permanent because I trust your eyes more than anyone else's in reading these names and locations.

Sharon C.
