In poking around the Internet for more info on my Makowski family of Buffalo NY, I encountered a website describing a fairly new book on Buffalo's First Ward (down by the water), a magnet for immigrants due to work on the wharves. The author has provided a unique list of nicknames for men of that ward: http://www.oldfirstward.com/nicknames/

Look for your Clare immigrant and perhaps you will pick up an interesting new fact about him.

The name Lott is discussed on this forum under “La(u)ncelot(t)e = Lot(t)” : http://www.ourlibrary.ca/phpbb2/viewtop ... t=Lancelot.

My own feeling is that Lott was a substitute for an Irish name which was already out of use by the 19th century. I suspect that Lancelot was an attempt at standardising Lott at a time when the original Irish name was either forgotten, or no longer considered desirable. But I’ve absolutely no evidence to support this theory.
