Scarriff Baptisms 1852 - 1881

Post by Sduddy » Sat Nov 04, 2017 10:41 am

The boundaries Catholic parishes do not always coincide with the boundaries of the civil parishes, and this is confirmed by Gerard Madden in his book, ‘Sliabh Aughty Ramble’ (Gerard Madden, East Clare Heritage, Tuamgraney, County Clare, 2010) when he says “Scariff is a modern parish made up of the old medieval parish of Moynoe and part of Tuamgraney” (p 73).

A transcription of the marriage records for Scariff was donated by James McNamara back in 2012, and here now (attached) is my transcription of the baptisms 1852 – 1872: https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls ... 1/mode/1up

There are two features in these baptisms that I have not met with before:
(1) the priest notes of some baptisms which he cannot find in the register. It seems that, on receiving a request for a letter of freedom (to marry in another parish), he looked for a record of the baptism of groom/bride, and, not finding it, noted the marriage in the place where he had expected to find the baptism. I have put these notes in the Notes column even though they have nothing to do with the preceding record - there might be a better way to deal with them. My way of identifying them is by starting with “note re baptism”, rather than the usual “married”
(2) between the beginning of Jan. 1861 and the end of June 1863, a Fr. Fogarty (I think that’s his name) gives both the married and maiden names of female sponsors - but I don’t know how much we can deduce from this - it’s possible that he did this only when he knew both names.

Edited on Jun. 26, 2018 to correct typo (I had 1212 for date of James McNamara's donation instead of 2012!)

Plus here is my transcription of Scarriff baptisms 1872 - 1881: https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls ... 1/mode/1up.

In order to make space for this I deleted the four previous attachments: Clonrush baptisms by residence and three Tulla baptisms by residence. I figure the attachments re residence are the most dispensable, so I will now go ahead and delete them all - this should make space for other contributors who would like to post attachments.
