Valkenburg

Post by kbarlow » Sun Aug 27, 2017 1:12 am

I am wondering if anyone on the forum has access to the US Ancestry.com records & would be kind enough to provide full details of an index I have found on Ancestry (I only have UK Heritage access). The spelling entry is John Velkenburg, born abt 1811 in Ireland, arrived NY 1851 on the ship Princess - the dataset is NY Irish Immigrant Arrival Records 1846-1851.

Also if anyone has any relationship to a family called Valkenburg, of Dublin & Co Mayo, mainly.

Yours hopefully,
Kerry

Hi, Kerry,

I went to school with a Valkenburgh, in New York's Hudson Valley area settled by the Dutch. Familysearch.org has info for the John Valkenburg family, for which I start you off with the actual ship list image, showing him with wife Ellen and daughter Lucy. Then I just jumped ahead to follow Lucinda aka Lucy. I assume that John and Ellen remained in Wisconsin.

BTW the Ancestry index does have all the info on the manifest for John. I show a magnification of his occupation on the manifest, next to another passenger's which starts with a "c."

Good luck with that,
Sharon C.

Brilliant - thank you Patrick & Sharon, this is the John I was searching for. I cannot make out the occupation, best guess is "horn trader", which may fit in with other, although later, Sth African connections (may be earlier ones there not yet known to me). What do others make of the entry of his occupation?

Sharon, I especially appreciate the original document and the obit of their daughter Lucy - now have leads to the family to help us build the picture.

regards,Kerry
