With very little success, I have been searching for more information about the unique crypt of my great great grandmother.

I have posted about it before - erected in 1870, it is situated in a Cillin near Ballyea - Knocknakilla.

The design is so unique - I am sure this was done deliberately but I have no clue why.

So, today, I came across this beautiful site called "Secret Ireland" which had posted a picture of another tomb that looks almost exactly like my great great grandmother's.

The caption states that it is "an empty Macnamara tomb which served as a temporary jail during the War for Independence".

What is ironic (or deliberate), my great great grandfather was the land agent for Col Macnamara at Ennistymon House.

Does anyone have any information about this style of tomb? Or, does anyone know where I might find that information? I wonder how common these crypts are...... And who was commissioned to build them?

Thanks for reading.....

File comment: This is the Macnamara tomb which, I think, is in Killilagh.
