The Irish Famine Eviction Project

Post by s1nead » Thu Jul 06, 2017 6:46 pm

I have just come across a very interesting research project that has been underway since September.

Called: The Irish Famine Project, its aim is to document evidence of evictions during the Great Irish Famine.

https://irishfamineeviction.com

The coordinator of the Project is Dr Ciaran Reilly

Dr Reilly has created this dedicated website to pin-point the famine eviction sites and to record information and background stories about the people displaced and involved in the evictions.

More than 400 sites have already been identified and their locations are fixed on a very interesting interactive map.

Clicking an area on the map brings up the number of evictions, the number of displaced persons, the name of the landlord and the name of the land agent.

For example: clicking Ennistymon reveals that 38 families were evicted by Cornelius O'Brien in 1849.

On another page on the site, Marcus Kean is mentioned as a ruthless and evictor.

The Project is reaching out to researchers to ask them to submit any information of evictions, locations and local folklore.

This could be additional information relating to an eviction already identified, or details of a new, as-yet-unidentified eviction.

Details of how to submit information can be found on the site.
