Clareabbey-Killone Parish Records pre 1853

Hi,

Many years ago (1985) a relative of mine had the Clare Heritage Centre do some research into our ancestors. The known ancestors lived in Parish of Killone (Catholic parish Clareabbey-Killone).

The Clare Heritage Centre found a baptism, possibly our ancestor in the Clareabbey-Killone parish records in 1839. However, the registers for this parish filmed by the National Library of Ireland and now available online only start in 1853.

We have emailed the parish (now called Clarecastle-Ballyea) and are awaiting a reply but I thought I would ask on the forum if anyone happens to know the whereabouts of the earlier register/s. Are they in the possession of the Parish or are they somewhere else (which might be the reason they weren't filmed)? It would be good to be able to see the register/s for ourselves.

The parishes list available at the Clarelibrary site indicate that the earliest records are:

Killone (civil) & Killone (RC) are 1863 (baptisms) 1863 (marriages)

& Clareabbey (RC) are 1853 (bap) & 1854 (marriages) - Parish address: the parish priest, Carecastle

Hi MarkV
I wonder if the early Newmarket-on-Fergus records cover some of the Killone-Clarecastle area. For some reason I have an idea in my head that there was some overlapping in that area. I think you should look through the Newmarket-on-Fergus records for 1839, just in case that was where the Heritage Cenre found the baptism.

Thanks Kerry and Sheila for the information and suggestions.

I checked the Newmarket-on-Fergus records for 1839 but no luck there. The entries for that year mostly didn't provide the place of residence, so I can't confirm if they included any of Killone parish.

John Grenham's website here:
https://www.johngrenham.com/records/rc_ ... urchid=761
says that Clare Heritage and Genealogical Centre has Catholic Baptism records for Killone Parish from 1834 which seems to suggest that there is a separate register rather than being part of the records of another parish.

I presume that the Clare Heritage Centre would have just transcribed/indexed the records and wouldn't actually have them in their posession. We will email them as well to ask about the records, so we will see if they reveal their sources.
