East Clare infants in the workhouse 1872-74

Post by smcarberry » Mon Aug 17, 2009 4:09 pm

From a resource previously online, Enhanced British Parliamentary Papers on Ireland, 1801-1922, I printed out two pages of
the Return Relating to Infants in Workhouses (Ireland), providing for two Clare workhouses the names of infants residing there during 1872-74. These babies were all under 12 months when admitted to the workhouse. A very few were also born there, and for these the mothers obviously were also present. Any of the babies might have been there with other family members as well. Although some did not survive, it may be possible to find survivors in other online databases, such as the 1901 Clare census and Ellis Island (NYC) passenger arrivals. The Pilot Search series of the LDS familysearch.org has
Scariff District birth registrations which should contain records for these infants.

There are some evident surname misspellings. This list is printed but would have been transcribed from handwriting, where
the errors may have occurred.

I hesitate to have this mundane bit of information supersede the meaty reply of Gerry Kennedy to the McNamara of Crusheen posting, but there inevitably will be a succession of later postings and I will likely lose sight of my note on this if I wait.

My prior workhouse posting was made from a print-out of a Parliamentary Paper previously available on the EPPI site. Today I bumped into the Google Book version, so now it is possible to reach infant listings for almost all the Clare workhouses in 1872. I tried all the workhouse locations but could not locate any infant lists for Corrofin/Corofin and Kiladysart (tried with various spellings). The workhouses that are included are on these pages:

Ennis p.54
Kilrush p. 67
Ballyvaughan p. 9
Ennistymon p.56
Scariff p. 98 [same as the prior posting made from the print-out]
Tulla p. 108 [same as the prior posting made from the print-out]

Here is both the longer link and a short one:
